Well...the S2000 needed more doors, more driven wheels, and a lot more torque...

No clue what the rate is for charging down there right now but what I found online lists it at ~$0.35/kWh. A Model 3 Performance and Long Range have an 85kWh battery so to fill it from 0 to 100 is ~$30 for 300ish miles of driving. If I were doing that route I'd charge up in Phoenix, once in the middle, and have no issues getting to LA where chargers are on every corner at this point.

Update-ish. I did my first long trip in the Tesla and it went off without a hitch. Left the MSP area with a full (100%) charge, swung through Eau Claire WI for a top off at the super charger while I ate lunch, arrived in Madison WI with ~30% battery left. On the way back I topped off at the supercharger in Madison WI to about 92% and headed home. Stopped at the same charger in Eau Claire for a top off and lunch before arriving home with ~40% battery left. This was without any kind of hypermiling going on. Speed was set to 78ish mph, heat set perfectly, used the heated seats and steering wheel a bit at the start, etc. The car planned the route and charging times/locations exactly as it should.

Take away I got is that there's no way that this car is getting the rated range of 312 miles on a charge unless you're going like 55mph with a tail wind. I got about 240-250 miles for a full charge but never ran it down. Could have done much better if I slowed down but YOLO. Anyway, the cost for the drive was $0 because I had free charging credits lol. Cost of premium fuel in southern WI was $3.90/gal.

Not bad at all.
So, does the NAV automatically plan the route to intersect with charging en route?

Yup. It routes you such that you hit superchargers along your route and auto navigates to them as stopping points as well as telling you how much and how long you need to charge to have sufficient battery to continue your trip. This is then synced to your phone so, for example, when I went to grab lunch the car pinged me when it was almost ready to go again so I could wrap up and head out. The nav can also tell you what amenities are available at each stop so you can plan ahead.

To be exact, $20.69 not including the charges at home before leaving and after getting home which is hard to tell because I don't have a way of knowing exactly how much power the car consumes at home.

Well that's pretty neat & probably less worrisome than hoping there's a gas station en route when you need it.
I've had a few of those moments with low fuel range in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the night, between Houston & LA.

It's not bad. IMO, they are working on opening a charger that's more mid way between my house and Madison that would have been better since the car charges faster when the battery is lower so I could have driven further before charging on the way there. On the way back I would have used the same charger. There is a charger further away but the car predicted I would have rolled in with 2% and I wasn't about to roll the dice on that lol.

where did the $30 for 300 miles come from the post above? Is that a standard fee more or less?

That was a random estimate of cost to charge the car from dead to full in California based on some random info I found online. It's not accurate because electricity costs have gone up.

There's no "standard" fee, the charger will either charge you by the kWh or by the minute depending on local laws. There's no connection charge or membership fees if that was your question.

It's funny but initially I thought it would be free transportation since there was no gas to be bought.
Kinda makes me feel better to know it somewhat balances out...nowhere near the same as gas obvi, but still.

It's free if you buy a Model S or X from 2017 or before.

But no, it's not free since electricity isn't free. It is, however, a lot cheaper. Especially so now with how much gas has gone up.

I saw a Model Y with the carbon fiber overlay door handles at Home Depot yesterday and I'm glad I didn't go with that. They looked tacky AF.

The camera covers arrived on Saturday so I hope to get those installed soon. Still thinking about the mirror caps...

Winter mode engaged. I don't know how to describe it but the car seems more efficient with the smaller wheels on here. The regen seems to be slower showing that the car has less rolling resistance and the steering is lighter as well. I can't comment on acceleration because winter tires will always feel slower but the handling seems more "squishy" than before which is expected. Picture is terrible because it's dark at like 4:30pm now.

Very cool. The thing that caught my attention was the castle like hub. I assume that is part of the regen, looks cool.

The sprocket design has nothing to do with regen, it's because the rotors are some new lightweight design from Brembo and are two pieces of different material press fit together. Rather than adding screws to hold the parts together like most two piece, they use the sprocket design to transfer the load from the disc to the hat. Pretty ingenious design if you ask me.

In case anyone is interested, the Tesla HATES cold weather lol. Temps here over the weekend were down to double digit below zero (I think I saw -22F on the dash) and it absolutely hates it. The heat pump can't keep up, the windows kept fogging up while driving, had to set the temp inside to "max" for it to stay any level of warm inside but it was still cold. The range when cold is absolutely abysmal. I'd say that in that level of cold it's 150 miles or less on a full battery. The regen braking also disables itself for about the first 10ish miles of driving because the battery is too cold to accept a charge.

More for the -22*F. Hard pass.
We dipped into the +20s over the weekend. Currently 33*F

It was terrible. Thankfully weather like that only lasts for a couple days before it warms up again. It was 25F (above zero lol) yesterday and it almost felt like a nice spring day.

I'm flying into MSP next Tuesday the 11th but for a quick day business trip visiting two customers and flying back home that evening. Will be my first time in Minnesnowta but unfortunately (or fortunately) not an overnight to have any extra free time. Always wanted to visit Surly...

We have some good customers in the area so I'll probably be back eventually. Thanks for keeping the snow away next week! And looks like 20sF as well!

The other cold days I've been rolling in the Jeep. Haven't burned gas in a while so thought it was time to do my part to support the oil/gas industry. I filled it up yesterday for the first time since October lol.

Hopefully the weather is nice for you when you get here. The second half of this week seems like it'll be super cold again before bouncing back early next week. We're supposed to get a ton of snow tonight and tomorrow before the temps plummet again. The high for Thursday is -3F with a low of -20F before windchills.

Surly is overrated, expensive, and a waste of time IMO. Let me know if/when you're back and I can guide you to (or go with you lol) to some of the better stuff in town.

Fully embracing that 'lectric lyfe?

Or trading in the Tesla?

There is a pretty positive Youtube review video I saw last week on the Rivian, I'll look for it.

Tesla will move on upon the arrival of this thing...whenever that might be. As of right now there's no date of arrival so I'm guessing sometime in late 2022 or H1 2023.
