VW Bug

Well I'm looking for something to start a project car. Was thinking about Dutson, but wanna try something else and the 1970ish VW bug come to my mind. Not gonna go crazy on this, just want to do a nice restoration and have some fun. Anyone have any experience about it? Any good forum? Is it hard to work on? Are the parts pricy and hard to get?? Potential? Any tips will be appreciated

Turn this guys...

I love air cooled vw's.
The parts are cheap as you can buy pretty much anything reproduction, but most of it is from south america and china. The repairs are just about as simple as it can get, but you can also make it as complicated as you want (the last picture you showed has nothing in common with any vw I've worked on).

I may be biased though. I learned to drive on a vw sandrail in Mexico when I was 9 or 10 and I drove this around in high school http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3025/...4018c1bd_b.jpg . I still have it, but it really needs paint.

Older VW Bugs are sweet!!

The early 70's bugs are cool (more like just model year 1970) but the later years are ugly. If I were to build one I'd get one from either the 50's or 60's.

I've been thinking about a project myself, a "mini" project.

Good luck!

There's a pretty decent one in my neighborhood...somewhat modified, but nothing like above. It's the guy's DD. I say go for it.

I had a 65 that we restored, I'm thinking of doing the same for my twin girls in a few years.

I wouldn't mind a Cali-style for my DD, though.

This will get you going on what engine mods are possible. This is for the more robust Type IV VW engine, but the principles are the same.

I would buy that 61 and turn it into that 1st picture you showed. I love those cars. Parts are SUPER cheap and very available as I believe they still produce the car in mexico.

my dad had a 1984 bug and he loved it. I love those cars too and those engines are good I heard. My neighbour has a 1969 bug, black, original and it still looks mint. He loves it too. I was thinking of asking him to sell it to me but I know I couldn't care for it as well as he does

Get the 61. It already has a 1900cc motor upgrade and dual carbs and a drop. Plus they look way better than 70's bugs, especially the lights and markers IMO. If you can find an oval window or split window bug in good shape you'll have something a bit more unique too. I used to have a 73 "standard" beetle, the same year they produced both that and the super beetle. My dad had 68 last, plus several others over the years and a Karmann Ghia.

LOL, the last picture I just throw it out there for fun, not gonna do anything crazy like that. What I'm thinking is just restore it to nice condition, with a batt black finish, lowered on 18s, with a fun little engine in the back.

good to know it's simple to repair, I'm somewhat a mechanic myserlf but nothing crazy, thanks man.

Cool, but forgive me I have very little knowledge on these bugs. Why say NO to the super beatle, what's the difference? And yeah i've read the wikipeida on that, so please don't tell me to google it.

The later models have some imrpoved suspension in the front and rear, but it isn't anything that can't be put into a older model. Also I think anything post 67 had a 12 volt electrical system, again a older model can be upgraded. The early models just look better.

The older models look much better IMO. I hate the curved windshield and the signals on the superbeetle along with the taillights. Get an older oval window beetle they look the best IMO.
