Volkswagon R32-Hot or Not?!

O.k. I saw the R32 for the first time yesterday spanking a Prelude and fell in love with the car. It was a bluish-purple color and was so neat looking. And the sound OMG the sound! So I got on the net to find out pricing and specs and DANG it's $29,100- 240hp, 6sp. and it's so cute. What do you guys think? Would you buy it? What are you opinions on the reliability of Volkswagons now? I know it's slower than the 300hp WRX but I think it's cuter! I'm going to the dealer this week to give it a spin! I can't believe I'm contemplating stepping outside the Honda/Acura realm.

Thoughts people, give me your thoughts please!

I think it is hot, but needs xenon headlights! Do not forget, it is also AWD.

There are already kits out there that get the 0-60 and 1/4 miles times in Enzo range. I think C&D had a 0-60 with the "Stage 3" kit of about 3.3 seconds.

An OEM R32 doesnt overly impress me much and $30G for something that's inherrently an economy car doesnt work for me. (I feel likewise about the STi and Evo.) But the HPA R32 is pretty impressive and could leave many Ferrari owners (non-Enzo/F50/F40) disillusioned.

Thanks Emumessenger
And F23A4, thanks alot for that MotorTrend article. Reading that is up for redesign next year makes me rethink this car. But it sooo cute. I'm going on my lunch today to give it a test drive.

Yep, all about power to weight ratio. Look at the World Rally cars. So much horsepower in such a small package.

...yeah, but how much does that "stage 3" cost? A ton of $$$ I bet... you could put that much into just about any car and get low numbers for 0-60.

Looks like I'm going to have to go to a bigger city to test drive one, not one on the lot here. DANG!!! $7k is my limit of putting money into any pocket rocket I get. I doubt I'll go the turbo stage at all if I get this car or not. Turbos are just not my thing.

Turbos rock. Even with an 02 Maxima, I still miss my 89 Colt GT.

Just got word there were only 5000 or so imported which means NO DEALS. Won't be anymore by the time I'm ready to get one (April 05) new anyways. I guess I'll have to take my chances and see if there are any left in April. But it's such a cute little car!

Anyone have a xenon kit for that car?

It has a nice drop from the factory, too.

The main thing that got me with this car is the 580torque and 550hp with the stage two turbo package.. But then you are literally spending more on the aftermarket packages then you are on the car.. The stage 2 package comes with reccomended alignment, brake, tire, launch control, etc packages along with the turbo so it totals over 45 grand on upgrades.

Here are the specs on the car, and a pic for fun..

official specs and a video showing the car launch... absolutely crazy.

Enjoy

WTF?...whats a point of an exotic car when you'll get beaten by a small VW?

This will make very expensive cars pointless.

Becuase in the end, it's still a VW and it just doesn't have the same ring as saying you own a Ferrari or Lamborghini.

And the R32s are nice. They're a little smaller than one might expect, but not bad if you don't need to carry more than two peopel on a regular basis.

I was hoping their reliability record had gotten better.

Consumer Reports reported the reliability as fair (which is dead in the middle). I'm use to the Excellent or atleast Good from the Honda/Acura. And the Golf was considered the Consumer Reports Used Car to Avoid for 2001-2003. That didn't make me feel great about it either. Even though the R32 is not exactly a Golf it's close enough. I think I'll pass, the thought was nice though.

My brother said the same exact thing but it's so cute! And I would not have paid $29k for it. There are plenty out there with 8k for $23-24k. Wow, I just realized the resale value isn't even that great. I'll pass.
