Alpine headunit I'm installing in the Jeep looks way better than that mid 00's abomination.

Interesting, I didn't know the transponder chip was keyed to the cluster? I guess since there's a proximity sensor and an idiot light tied to when the key gets too far. The car beeps at you!

Never did it myself, I knew a guy that would do it for me likely through a scantool as well.

Yeah, I like the old one because it looks '80's.

But the new one looks much better.

it was pretty bad. The rear view was useless with the original design.

Yikes... I have that issue with a lot of radios these days - they all look pretty old and cheap. CF should take good care of you though.
It's on the way back to CF. They gave no issues. Not sure what to get. I want CD/DVD & NAV.

Is a CD/DVD NAV headunit not an OEM option? Or is that prohibitively expensive?

I seem to recall the 4Runner crew doing some sort of Scion head unit swap a while back, I thought. I'd be shocked if Toyota didn't have head units that swapped between vehicles.

There is no DVD version I have seen from Toyota.

Thanks, it's out because I need to get the miles programmed & it's going to the dealer this morning to get the series of small issues fixed.

Ah, I think you're right. I didn't have the satnav in my old truck but the new one has it so I fell down a rabbit hole reading about capability add-ons (mainly all the time cameras and satnav lockout override). I must have been thinking about the satnav lockout override when I mentioned the DVD player.

However, I do recall bookmarking this nerd's page which seemed intriguing... if you're feeling particularly solder-y and wanted to roll your own.
https://www.top4runners.com/ja/2007/navvideo.html

Although, how much do you really use an in-car DVD? especially in a little sporty car?

The new clusters are awesome. The only funny thing is that it shows the notorious torque dip very clearly in the dyno graph haha

Found a video.

I want it for CD, there's no need to watch a movie in a small car. (IMHO) Had the rears seat system in the Tundra. Worked great keeping the Grandkids occupied.

People still use CD's? Just stream it from your phone via BT or AA/CP. My new head unit doesn't even have a CD player. My Golf doesn't have one, my old Jeep didn't have one either. Only car I own with a CD player right now is the Subie because it's old skool.

You save a ton of space in the dash along with a lot of weight by getting rid of the CD player mechanism.

99.99999999999% of my listening is XM or Spotify. I have 12gazillion CDs that are in my iTunes library but I stopped paying Apple for match so only have what is actually in my phone immediately available and I like having a few CDs in the car.

I came across my LPs last year and bought a record player, talking about old skool.

Hopefully I never find any 8 tracks.

lol

Fair enough. My comment is more around the fact that the more modern looking head units won't have CD functionality because most people don't care about it anymore.

Wow. That seems like a really trick unit. I don't even want a new stereo, but I kinda want that.

Is it AUS only? Will it even work with our upright radio stations? Probably only plays Kylie Minogue.

Try eBay.upsidedown?

Shipping from .AU is a nightmare right now though. Pay whatever it takes to avoid .AU post office. Go DHL or it'll be months before it shows up

Found a store in Malaysia that ships to the US.
https://www.fasmoto.com/kenwood-ddx919ws

Choose DHL. The exchange came out to 709.78 so less than comparable US units. Now I have to hope it's not a scam but I paid wth a CC through Paypal.

Hopefully I won't have to find out but if I do worst case I can claim through Amex.

I found them on Amazon, they are selling through them. It was 50 bucks less going direct.

There were no bad reviews online, (mostly no reviews) I figure since it's on a CC for today I'm playing with Amexs' money so worth trying to save the 50 bucks.

They responded to my questions promptly (inside their timezone) I'm hoping to have DHL tracking about 7pm seeing as that's 9am their time and when they started responding last night.

They were valid concerns that I addressed in my decision making process.

Wife is pissed I have 1400+ out on stereos. She doesn't care 650 is coming back.

If they truly understood the depths to which the sickness takes hold, they would never let us buy the cars we really wanted

I have notes on my phone of what I plan to do with car(s) I'm considering buying. Constantly adding lines whenever I see a mod that would be worth doing.

If I showed the gf, I am pretty sure her words would be: "if it needs this much stuff done, why do you wanna get this car?"

Keyword: need. Yes indeed, it "needs" things like coilovers, wheels, and a short shifter and no matter what car it is, the list will likely be similar.

Answer: "ugh, because the bean counters hamstrung the engineers when they were designing the car. It just comes with the bare minimum and they expect that you'll add the right stuff later. Besides, if all this stuff was unnecessary, would it even be an option? I think not." Then you smile smugly, grab your pillow and a blanket and sleep on the couch.

I've found that when I stop complaining about the endless Starbuck's trips and how much getting her hair did costs...she
doesn't seem to ask me too much about other things.
Had to buy a new wheel for the Audi...she was like, yeah, get the wheel. You need it.
Rear diffuser on the Audi...she finally noticed it and when I told her what it costs she was was like
wow...that's a good deal, that makes the car look so good.

Yeah dude. Protip: don't date ABGs/high-maintenance girls. Protip #2: if you do, don't overreact at the price of that handbag they want, even if it looks 99% like that other one or three that they already have

I learned not to complain. Notice and compliment instead. Works out better in the end.

My wife is cheap AF so there's nothing for me to complain about. I spend a lot more money than she does, thankfully she's generally ok with it. Most of my money goes towards tools and not car stuff, bought a $1000 jointer the other day lol. Though I did buy the head unit for the Jeep that I still need to post a picture of...

My Wife is cheap as well and nothing she wants do I have any problem with. She deserves everything she wants. (seriously)

Here is the radio on Amazon. I hope I got the last one because now it says unavailable.
I'm trying to find a region hack for it, its region 3.

Amazon Amazon

Really excited, it looks really nice.

See I could but she still wouldn't care. A car doesn't mean anything to her. She doesn't GAF about cars and doesn't GAF about status so a Mercedes of any kind makes no sense to her.

100%. My wife makes nearly as much as I do, it's her money too and she should do anything she wants with it.
