They also built a wiring harness to bypass the sensor to see if it still occurred (it did and that is the harness that got pinched).

This is a long shot but check if the shop checked all the PT-CAN bus termination resistors in the engine wiring harness. Since they were swapping out a motor and messing with all the ECU sensors/actuators connections, a termination resistor could have been damaged with all the harness movement. A poorly terminated CAN bus can produce intermittent ECU faults and engine performance.

This could be helpful, thank you. I'll look into it.

Sorry to hear of the struggles, but glad you're still partially able to still enjoy is.
Limp mode was what push my uncle to dump his 1995 W140 S420. Going into limp mode at 75mph & having the car arrest itself down to about 30 was not a fun time on a busy CA highway.

I'll bet it wasn't! When it happened to me, the car put itself into neutral, but I lost power steering. It was pretty unnerving.

That would void my very valuable (at the moment) warranty on the engine.

Well, I'm sorry the problem hasn't been completely nailed down and eliminated yet.

This sounds way better than an out of spec crank or any engine internal problem. That should count as a win.

Certainly not ideal, but I'm glad you ruled out needing another engine. Best of luck, Tim! We're all rooting for you.

Actually, it's now running well ALL OF THE TIME! They replaced the pins in the connector on the aforementioned wiring harness and I haven't had a single problem since I got it back.

And, DAMN, this engine is strong!

Hopefully this is a new beginning of many troublefree years to come... But you might need to keep a laptop in your car at all times now just in case

Very very happy for you, Tim.

Crazy how some damaged pins / connector can cause so many issues.

Enjoy the hell out of the car!

Gonna be honest here Tim.
You needed a win. Real bad. So I'm happy.

but this did feel like I'm watching a porn workin up a chub...what's it gonna be?!? something juicy? something to gossip about? brunette? redhead?!?!
and the porn started and it was a dude with tiny tits just blowing kisses at the camera but never showing us the goods. very disappointing outcome in that regard.

but honestly...I'm really happy for you. A simple fix is not only something you deserved...it was something you needed.

Thank you.

Turns out the electrical gremlins had to do with a couple of electrical relays. 6 months to figure that out.

Well, after I last documented what I thought was the solution on here, it started acting up again. I ordered some new wiring harnesses that took several weeks to get here from Munich, but when they got here they were the wrong ones. When my install shop was doing some test driving, they noticed the Auto Stop/Start wasn't working. From previous experience they knew the electrical system had to be in top shape for that to work, so they started doing some tests with a meter and some more driving and isolated a power drop. They tried some new relays in that section of the system and the car magically came alive, again. I've put a couple thousand miles on it since then, including my annual Devil's Highway run in N. Arizona and it is like new again. No issues.

BTW, I didn't notice the Auto Start/Stop wasn't working because I never use it.
