Talking Too Fat for your car?

Interesting post about cargo load and maximum weight for your car.

We might be surprised to realize just how easy it is to exceed a manufacturer's Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) for a passenger car or a sport-utility vehicle. That figure, when exceeded, absolves the automaker of blame in the event of mechanical or dynamic failure.
The eight-cylinder Chevrolet Corvette and the four-cylinder Mazda MX-5 Miata each carry maximum-load ratings lower than 400 pounds. Go figure.

Well, the Vette and Miata ARE only two seaters, so if a dude and the wife combined exceed 400 lbs, they've got some problems.

Thought I read it's not the car it's the tires. Get tires with a higher load rating & you won't have a problem. Get better springs & shocks & you won't have a problem.

I would imagine it's about all of them, springs, shocks and tires.

ahaha I thot this thread meant not being able to fit in a car. well long story short, I'm 285 and the girl was err 120 and no need to say the MX-5 handled quite poorly even tho it still had some get up and go to it, around corners it was pretty sad, now i understand why

That is the RSS publisher domain.

It redirects to the Autopia Blog, from Wired

Once I packed myself, a family of four and their luggage for a two-week trip to Germany into my Santa Fe and the engine lost all enthusiasm for life. A hill I can usually go up at 50 when alone I could not exceed 35 and that was with the motor making its feelings heard in second gear. I don't know what the weight limit is but the back end was sinking way down and I think there was probably close to 1,100 pounds of human and luggage in that car.
