Speeding bikes and cops

whats the deal with cops giving chase to a bike thats speeding? I've seen quite a few instances where a bike has basically flew past a cop, and the cop didnt do anything. However, i have heard that State Troopers will give chase. Anybody know what the 'protocol' is? What about if theres a pack of bikes, and all of them are speeding? It just seems to me that chasing down a sportbike might seem fruitless, they get up and go so fast, maybe thats why some dont even bother. Anybody wanna shed some light on the subject?

I don't know a lot about the actual protocal but I have been told by frineds that are the force that most traffic cops will not give chase to a bike. This is due to the safety of the biker and the officer... As you know a bike is like a rocket, most bikes regardless of cruiser and crotch rockets can get from 0 to 60 in under 5 seconds, whereas most cruider cars can't get this same acceleration (they usually get about 8 to 10 seconds and are heavily loaded with equipment).

If the cop does give chase it usually makes the biker travel at a faster speed because he/she know that the bike will out manuever and out right out perform the car. They can get away, and when they travel at higher speeds the logic is that the biker can cause harm to himself and in the instance he does make a mistake; at high speeds his mishap will not give enough time to other motorists to compensate and react quiclky, thus adding to the accident most likely. Cops don't want to endanger more lives.... if the option is one casualty or two, the cop is going for the one....

Also, remember cops are trained to drive very aggresively when need be and to stop someone if need be (i.e. pit a car, cause a spin out, trap a car, etc.) you can't do these thing to a bike. I bike will be able to take tighter turns and curves that a car just can't do. Bikes can weave in and out of traffic, a car can't do it with out major loss in speed.... most cities have the protocal that if your going to chase a bike that if you reach a certain speed, usually between 80-100, that the cop must back off and let the bike go. Also, some bigger cities expecially in the south and the west have motorcycle cops for just this reason, motorrcycle cops can hang with a speeder on a bike...

Don't take everything I said as fact, I am telling you what my cop friends have told me.....

I dont think you need a busa to out run those cruiser police bikes.....a well modded 600cc will out accelerate and out manuver those cruisers

One of the few times I was doing the speed limit on my FZR1000, this guy on a GSXR flies by me right in front of a cop. The cop pulls out and pulls me over! I ask him what the problem is and he wants to know where me and my buddy are going in such a hurry. When I tell him I didn't know the guy, I ask him why he didn't go after him. He says, "they don't pay me enough to go after guys like that, now shut up and go your way."

BTW, this was a bike cop.

Cops harley's generally have around 60-70 HP. Not enough when a stantard 750 has about 120+.

Not much of a chance. But cops have way more training in riding in stressful conditions.

I hit 285km on a 1300 Ninja !!! AS A PASSENGER ON THE SHOULDER IN RUSHHOUR TRAFFIC GOING TO DOWN TOWN TORONTO!!! Whoa will never do that again..... a 40 min - hour drive took 7.5 min!!

I promissed myself on that day I would never get a bike...If two of us hit 285km without even pushing the bike to it's limits, I can't imagine what that bike would do with one person on it..

RENLINEN you lucky bastard!! keep it safe buddy, I know you will I just had to say that.

A buddy of mine has that r1 as well, he has put new gearing in it.... now doing 120km on the highway he can pop a wheelie (wheely?) and fly up past 200km on one wheel!! I saw him doiing it on the highway beside me!! Priceless .. I wish I had a camera on me.

There is absolutely no way a cop on a bike no less a cop in a car will stand a chance against some of the super sport bikes. I even belive I could outrun them on my g/f's 500 turing bike
