Something you don't see every day
that's one bad defect... Ouch... I imagine either this person did a few peelouts further stressing it... BTW a few years ago did you post up something about some dude's BMW which he went off-roading with and that messed up the car so badly that the engine pushed up a few inches? I can remember that thread here but can't find it....

Yeah I posted something awhile ago about that other car. It was a 545. The guy didn't go offroading though, he hit a cinder block on the highway at 70. Tore through most of the undercarriage.
No physical damage to any other part of the car.
Never tried it, but I'm guessing its impossible on a 7 since the gear selector is an electronic switch. Computer doesn't let you do stuff it thinks may harm the car. Also the owner is an older gentleman who drives normally.
something like that can happen when driving on ice/snow/slippery roads.
If you stand on the gas and keep the wheels spinning on the slippery surface and then hit the asphalt where it will stop spinning; it can rip the cv boot or even do damage like this

I've seen a lot of bizarre shit in my 13 years in the biz, and I was waiting to see that happen in real life but it never happened. Seeing how common those parts are, and how isolated claims like this are, I think it is safe to say it was just a defective part, any part can be defective, not the end of the world.
That video was pretty good, the guy seemed weird, almost like a pudgy version of me

I'm not surprised that they are hollow. That's the way I would design them. Lighter and stronger, if designed properly. Most driveshafts (or driveline, from the trans to the diff) are hollow as well.
As for the video. I see douchebags. Although it was entertaining.

You are right, hollow is lighter and stronger. Thats just a deffective part

^ It is very interesting.
A question, if you will. Say that guy was out of warranty on his car. If the tech can see that it was defective part, would BMW pay the bill for it then, or would it be the customer's responsibility?
I'd argue that part should last the life of the car, at least in that failure mode, especially if the car is driven by an old man.

You can't just walk in off the street though and get stuff for free. You generally need to be a customer there for a little bit.
That video made my whole day. That was just SO funny. Thank you VERY much.
This lesson also applies to S2000s and their weak rear diffs. I never plan to take mine to a drag strip. Launching at 6k rpm FTL.

The guy in that video reminds me of something I've seen on Top Gear....he just seemed to epitomize the following statement:
"M3s' are driven exclussively by cocks"
- Jeremy Clarkson

S2000 != drag car. Although some from the local group of S2Ki members seemed to think so when I had mine.
