Definitely consider a 4Runner. Still expensive but less so than the Cruiser crowd and just as reliable. The tow rating is like 5k lbs though I think.

The GX is a solid car that does great but the fuel economy blows and the interior isn't all that big relative to the overall size of the thing.

If you can't find a good Cayenne, consider a Touareg. They are basically the same thing for less money. Is the tow performance of the V6 not adequate? I'd just get that one as it's more reliable, less to maintain, and chugs less premium. All you're looking for is a daily after all. You'll get the Porsche experience for a bit less cash.
Good advice / thoughts all around - I doubt I'll off-road much if any but who knows, I got a few buddies who wheel and it would be fun to tag along and see what it could do on occasion.

4Runner is an option too ... probably more at the bottom of the list.

I had no idea the VR6 Touareg could tow 7700lb at all .. figured that would be V8 / TDI territory.

I'll give those a look see.

I'm sure you lose some amenities, but didn't the Cayenne have a VR6 option as well?

Not having much opportunity for much off-roading nearby (4-6hr drive to Hill Country) other than "gettin' muddy" I'll probably be looking at 2WD as well.

Yup. It was pretty much the same as the one in the VW. I think the Porsche had a bit more power but not a ton.

How about an M5 with a blown motor? You're handy and all that; I'm sure it would be no problem for you to repair.

Trust me, if I had spare funds and the yellow S4 was done ... I would consider your offer but it would certainly would be grounds for divorce .

Wishing you luck with your car man. I know it was super well cared for, too.

I didn't even consider a Touareg, but now I'm pretty interested in those.

Plus side to them:

Dirt cheap, VR6 tows the same amount as the V8, reasonable gas mileage, still has air suspension / differential if needed, and extremely part abundant.

I found 2 of them local for under 8k and they both include roof racks / upsized tires and 100-120k miles.

Maybe I'll add the Touareg to my list to check out.
Quick search found a 2017 Wolfsburg Edition for $25 with <100k on it.

Keep in mind that the Touareg is basically the same as the Porsche and comes with all the fun service and upkeep costs too...don't think it'll be like a GTI or Passat to maintain.

Always looking, nowhere close to buying, unless a buyer for the Malibu falls in my lap out of nowhere.

I feel like my plans can change suddenly, but .. right now, I am really loving the idea of having the V8, air suspension, and the front & rear lockers .

I found one in Vegas for $7500 ... up to date maintenance, 109k miles, and said he would throw in some Offroad tires depending on the deal.

So tempting.

$7500 with F/R lockers? That's a rare spec, buy it. It likely won't really go down in value much over time because of the rare spec. Finding another one with lower miles and the front locker will be damn near impossible.

Edit: Once you fix it up, I might even buy it from you.

A7 is not sold yet but, the moment I have the money I'll see if I can convince her away of what we agreed upon .

Do what you want.
She can't do anything about it cause the MDX won't be able to follow you all the way through Moab.

I had an epiphany this morning .. if I buy a Touareg with air suspension .. it will certainly fit into my garage even with some offroad tires (gives it approximately a 1.5-2" lift) and the roof racks.

With that being said, I'm sure this overwhelmingly convince my wife to buy it now.

Sell A7, sell completed Imola S4, then search for daily.

Honestly, smartest route for sure given the reasons I listed in my first update.

I'm about ready to throw in the motor in the yellow car but selling it may take between 1-2 months depending if I find the right buyer.

I just need to be patient but as you guys know, it can be difficult

Surprisingly, she's onboard with the Touareg.

I think it can be more maintenance heavy but the reality is I'm getting a nicer vehicle than a Tundra, can tow almost 8000lb, gets better gas mileage, fits kids better, and is about half the cost.

I swear, the LX / Landcruiser / Tundra owners know what they have ... my price range gives me 200k+ mile options.

I'd argue they do last a long time and the reliability has been demonstrated many times before but, they're bland AF.

It's the smarter choice but, we both know I'm not smart.

It's also huge compared to the Cayenne/Touareg.
I frequently browse the by owner part of CL to kill some time. Found an immaculate W123 300D with 225k on it, but it's so clean I'd feel bad parking it outside under the tree in my driveway with the fine sap it drops.

Edit: That Touareg looks great.

I told you I'd give you $25 for, might even stretch to $50. Let me know when it's done and I'll book a flight down. I can do $100 for both cars too.

You told her you'd sell them...just not how much you'd sell them for.

IMO skip the red tow hooks and roof rack. Other than that it looks great!

Landcruisers & Tundras measure at nearly 75" tall - my garage is 78" tall but at the approach angle, it's actually less than that.

The Touareg is 68" tall - best part? It's 7" shorter than the A7 and it's the same width .. I'll have more garage space parking it.

Well I'll also argue that the brand new Rubicon also comes with the most modern tech, no miles, minimal maintenance, and a warranty lol but even a used JKU Rubicon will run you at least $30k for a good one. That said it'll also have lower maintenance costs but still.

Everything you've said so far shows that you don't need a Rubicon to do what you want to do with this thing. Once you get out on the trails, you'll quickly find out if you want something more or not.

Briefly considered a JLU, but it'd be wasted as a pavement princess that only sees gravel 2-3 times a year.

I think I will love off-roading but, I doubt I'll love it so much that I would justify the need for a Jeep
