So my 15 year old friend got a Yamaha R6

I'm 17 and a senior in high school next year, and I've had my M1 license since last summer. Getting a motorcycle has always been an aspiration of mine, but I know that it's not very realistic considering my age.

I have a friend that's two years younger than me, and when I got my license last year, he would always tell me how he wanted to get his. Well yesterday he calls me, tells me he has a surprise. He comes to my house riding a 2002 Yamaha R6 he bought off craigslist with his allowance/bar mitzvah/etc. money. He doesn't even have his permit yet and hasn't even registered the bike. And of course he's kept it from his family.

Now here's my dilemma: His dad passed away two years ago and I KNOW he's going to injure himself or probably worse. If something happens to him his mom wouldn't know what to do and I'd feel guilty as hell.

How can I defuse this situation?

p.s.-He let me ride it around the block and goddamn was it fun.

What are your state's driving without a license laws? In many places, getting caught driving without one (underage) automatically makes you wait till you are 18 to be eligible for one.

So, I'd remind him of the trouble he'll get in WHEN he gets caught on it. On top of that, the thing isn't registered and I'm not sure he can register it on his own. He's going to have to tell someone who is 18 to get it registered.

With that info, maybe he'll decide to park it until he has his license (and the motorcycle endorsement), its registered, insured, and he has the right safety equipment (sounds like he probably doesn't have that either).

At a minimum, don't encourage it and try to help him come to teh right decision on his own. Ratting him out is a bad deal, but if he doesn't figure it out, this is going to end bad one way or another.

what i want to know is how do you afford a TL on rims as a 17 year old, you know you live in beverly hills, not west l.a....

by the way, tell your friend not to kill himself with that thing

Call his mother, tell her, and when you do be sure tell her that she didn't get a single word of this from you, perhaps a neighbor...

Would you rather have his mother pissed off at him? Or would you rather have one less friend and a mother that doesn't know what to do because her son just flew off an overpass?...

I've had friends with crazy bikes (CBR1000, R1, GSX-R) that have went down because of ,and not because of, lack of experience... Trust me it's not a good experience for anybody...

Right, like he's going to wait 2 years to do that.

Agreed, tipping off the mom is probably the best route. It'll suck ratting him out, but it's for the better

I'd agree at least about the first bike. I'm not going to let myself get something fast for my first bike, because I know I'll kill myself

He doesn't have to wait 2 years - just till he's 16. I double checked here: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/dl/checklists/mc.htm

Kind of scary that adults don't need to do a riding test or pass a course to get the endorsement. If your visions good, give them a little money and you are good to go.

The 18 thing is a penalty in many states for getting caught driving without a license. So if he gets picked up for speeding, etc. He could become ineligible for any license till he is 18. I'm not sure if that is the case in CA though.

Stop being a fucking douchebag. A $5000 dollars beater is just as dangerous as a $35,000 car in the irresponsible hands, when in the public roads. So what if that his family is more fortunate than yours, and he gets a new TL for his first car? If anything, blame your family for not being able to afford it, so, just live with it.

Damn, all those "you-are-16-years-old-driving-a-brand-new-car-because-daddy-mommy-paid-for-it" comments are getting old.

I'm in an Acura because my parents didn't want me driving around in some unsafe shitbox, but let's not stray down this road.

Hypertech, I meant he wouldn't wait that long to get it registered on his own. He'll have to tell a family member (maybe a friend? not sure who can get it registered for you) and it seems he's trying to avoid that right now.

Yeah, someone will have to register it. The person who registers it is the one who legally owns it. Hopefully he tells his mom or really trusts whoever he has do that.

fucking retard. most of your posts are shits. even in your other threads. stay on track man. GOD

To OP, you should definitely tell his mom about it. Just make sure your friend doesn't find out that it was you who told her about it. PREVENT it before you REGRET it.

It's an Acura TL, not a Cayman S or Maserati coupe. His mom and dad probably handed it down to him after they went and bought something else. Were not talking anything too out there for upper middle class people...

At his friends house (OP), at another friends house, relatives home, garage in the corner, under a cover....

TO the OP, I think your best bet would be to tell his mother what her son has done, and let it be handled from there. Also if he does come to your house again, on his bike, I think you should smack him across the face for being stupid, he doesn't have it registered, doesn't have a license to drive it, and this could fuck up his future seriously. If he plans on any law enforcement career, tell him to kiss it good-bye. If he plans on any careers where judgment in quick and extreme situations are involved, tell him to kiss it goodbye.

Also the fact that he's endangering others doesn't help...

Tell him to take an MSF course once he can and how great it is. I've heard from people thats its pretty fun actually and you learn a lot in a few hours what would take years of riding experience.

You can definitely tell who got shit cars and who didnt when they turned 16 by the responses here.

Sounds like your buddy is going to kill himself off before he costs his parents any more grief. Who the hell is that detached from their kids that 1) that kind of money can just be withdrawn without notice and 2) he can enter into a contract of sale of that magnitude without their knowledge.

get him a Silverwing or Bergman.
they have like 600 or 650 cc Scooters. they can Easily keep up on interstate speeds.
my mom has one. when I'm at home and to cheap on gas and just running to town to drop off bills or maybe go to the doctor.(something that doesn't require hauling or hauling people) I sometimes take her 07 Silverwing. her Silverwing pretty trick to it also has XM and bluetooth hooked into her helmet.
She got the bike brand new i think with the extended warrenty+ few other goodies(like that XM box+helmet+misc crap) i think it was 8-9 grand.
by no means it's like a CBR600 or R6 but it's easy on gas(she gets like 60-70 mpg) plus you can pass people easy.

1. Sell R6.
2. Take MSF course.
3. Buy safety gear.
4. Buy a 250.
5. Ride carefully and enjoy motorcycling.

It's either that or...

1. Keep R6.
2. Get injured or killed.
3. Devastated family and friends.

As an avid motorcyclist (averaging almost 20k miles per year on my '07 GSX-R600s), and a track-goer, I cannot stress enough the importance of gear and proper safety instructions.

Tell him to check out www.sportbikes.net and go to the Beginner Riders section for detailed information and guidance. An R6 is just simply too much bike for a 15-year-old.

You'll NEVER use a CBR600 or R6 to its full potential on the streets. Even if you tried. Stick with the 650's, 500's, 250's.

Back to the topic: I know you do not want to hear this, but we all know the right thing is to let your friend's mom know. Hopefully that action on your part will lead to motorcycle training courses, a safe rider and a friend who isn't dead.

Well, last night I called his older brother and told him everything.

He's going to have to sell the bike and his brother ended up beating the crap out of him. It actually turns out that his older brother secretly had a motorcycle also a few months ago and only sold it because he fell on it too many times.

Oh, and to the people mad at me because I have a TL-S, I'm sorry if I've offended you in any way.

Awesome (well, not awesome for your buddy, but you get the point)

What else would be awesome is if the two kept it between themselves without telling anybody else. That way no parents get involved and trust remains. Of course it might already be too late for that...
