Wow...expensive maintenance for a high performance technology...NO WAY!!!
Give me a break...every 40k isn't too bad.
I'm shocked you didn't discover this sooner with the DSG in the A3...

Every 40k.. big deal.
Even if people keep the car till 80k, $400 aint nothing on somthing like a DSG. Well worth it, gotta pay to play!
Sounds like you reaching to try to bash somthing. I mean hell, some spend more on a clutch and flywheel that need to be replaced way before 80k miles.

Wasn't trying to bash VW; I was just shocked by the high price. The previous generation ZF 01M and 09M transmissions used in the Golf/Jetta/Passat/A4/A6 uses the Pentosin OEM replacement ATF, which only costs $14/L and used a $30 filter. 3L per fluid change, so around $80 for a service if you decided to do it. About 1/3 the cost of servicing the DSG. Even Toyota's World Standard ATF used in the new IS350 (IIRC) only costs $40/gal.
Given the high cost of the fluid, I bet that few people will actually service these transmissions, leading to a disaster for VW.

Agreed, and 2 changes take you to 120k. I personally wouldn't give that a second thought if I desired a DSG. I would get a manual but would expect to spend even more in 120k miles.

But this is not a big deal by any stretch...None of the trannies listed use a twin clutch system, which in turn probably requires this more expensive fluid for who knows what technical reasons...
Point is, its a small price to pay for a high performance automatic transmission should that be your druthers.
So, there will be no "disaster" at VW because the cost of ATF fluid is more expensive on a low volume sports compact.
Go run along and memorize your viscosity charts.

That was a problem that plagued the last generation of trannies. This generation seems to be A-OK.

at least the tranny will last.
ZF had issues with their 01M and 09M transmissions in the VW/Audi models. My transmission guy in SC rebuilds a good # of these with 50-70K on the clock for about $3500. Remanufactured unit runs 5K.
Aisin Warner had issues with their transmissions as well. So not all transmissions are as reliable as you may believe.

many of us probably easily spend more than $200 on oil every 40k miles, espeically those that choose synthetic oils or pay to have someone else change their oil for them
but still $200 is still a lot of money just for some fluid/filter.....$25 bucks a liter is like as much as grey goose
will you will have to replace both the clutches at some point as well?......

Considering the amazing technology, its worth the small admission price.

I am a die hard manual transmission man. I love having a clutch.
But when the A3 was first released I drove a loaded one with DSG, and let me tell you this car almost had me reconsider my stick shift ways.
In the end my desire to clutch and H-pattern shift still wins.
But..DSG is THAT good. Hell, its amazing.
