Hardwired Escort Passport 7500 for me. Works fair enough, but lasers are nasty.

Escort 8500 (??) comes with Blue lighting OR Red lighting - choose the one that matches your TL/TL-S ambient lighting.

V1 can't do that.

I highly recommend the valentine 1.
We hopped in my friends g35 at 10:30 at night last minute from dallas to go party in Austin for Back to school, and we got there in about 2 hours without 1 single ticket. It is a really good radar detector and catches everything with direction.

no point in buying one. what if a cop uses a laser gun rather than a radar gun?

If he's using laser you're screwed, but if he's using radar you have a chance. Seeing as 90% are still with radar my 8500 is on all the time.

I thought that even with Laser you had a *chance* (however slim) to catch some "scatter" from hits on cars ahead of you. No???

Not necessarily. My Escort has saved me every time. (not having a front plate really helps)

This has happened to me several times. It's also good b/c in NC we don't have front plates, so they have to hit something like the headlight or windshield which increases the chance of picking up "scatter".

As for which detector... do a search b/c this has been discussed 11ty billion times... but I am personally a Valentine 1 man myself. That with the hidden display is something I swear by.

Hey tls08 - good to ask about radar detector recommendations. and some good answers from your friends here in the blog. if you don't mind, let me add some thoughts:<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
things to consider when you go to invest in a RGD (really good detector).<o:p></o:p>
1. like other technologies, you have to spend enough to get capable technology so a visit to the local WM for a $99 detector is a waste of your time and money as that level of cost v. performance does not cover all the guns, all the bands and w/ enough range to do you any good. so be wise and don't waste your money on a cheap detector.<o:p></o:p>
2. you should consider then, that your investment ought to give you future returns by keeping you safe against all the guns, all the time. everyone in this blog, including you, are correct in suggesting Escort, Bel and Valentine. All 3 brands see all the guns w/ enough range to help you react in time to take preventative measures and not get stopped.<o:p></o:p>
3. you also need to consider w/ seriousness, the comment made from vkick, concerning the rare but possible, "dead in their sites laser gun" attack - Only Escort and Bel (in our list of detectors to consider) have add-on systems that completely disarm the laser gun and prevent it from targeting and tracking you for purposes of being stopped. Both the Escort and the Bel systems are incredible in their operation and relatively easy to add on once you have purchased their windshield mount detectors. ie, you don't have to buy all the pieces immediately but instead you can always add the 'shifters'/'blockers' when you're ready. all of their models work w/ their affordable laser 'shifting'/'blocking' systems. Valentine does not have this option.<o:p></o:p>
4. and finally, but maybe most importantly (as we are speaking of investments), you need to make yourself aware of the single greatest increasing threat of being stopped today - the rapid placement of red light and speed cameras being deployed all across North America. Thousands already active w/ more being added/installed every single day. Only Escort and Bel have a detector that is fully prepared to asses and alert you to these threats accurately and only Escort and Bel offer you web ready detectors for instant, easy downloads that allow you to keep your increasing threat database updated on all of these imposing new threat locations. Again, no technology of this type is available from Valentine.<o:p></o:p>
5. bonus - ever drive in the urban area w/ a RD? if you have, as all of your friends on the blog have, you will get dozens of alerts from your detector ... and none of them will be real threats. that's because many of the security systems installed in many businesses around you and nearly all of the automatic door openers at all of the local stores, businesses and corner gas stops, operate in the same bands as do law enforcement guns. all other brand detectors have no technology to know the difference and so they work as simple receivers (dumb receivers) and alert you to all of these non-threats! again, only Escort and Bel have patented technology to analyze and eliminate these false alert threats and let you drive w/ a detector that works as a detector and not as a simple, false alert noise generator. <o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
the really cool part about all of this is that you have the smarts to know you need a really good detector - good for you. and, you have the opportunity to choose, w/ knowledge, the best choice in complete protection w/ all the options and the technology to meet current and new, increasing threats, all in one brand - Bel or Escort.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>

I have this one: Cobra XRS 9930

Cobra XRS 9930 - 12 Band Ultra Performance Digital Radar/Laser Detector with Full Color ExtremeBright DataGrafix Display

It's got 12-band detection, laser gun detection, voice alerts, 360 degree detection, compass, car battery voltage and other stuff. I highly recommend this radar/laser detector. It has worked for me so far.

If you are looking to spend that kind of money, I would get the Beltronics STI. Its the only detector that can not be detected by SPECTRE.

juniorbean - not spam, simply facts. you can check the facts by visiting any of the manufacturer sites, esp k40 & cobra which do not have the same sensitivity even close to Bel, Escort of Valentine, and then of course visit the Bel, Escort and V1 sites and do a performance, feature and coverage comparison. facts are very hard to ignore and certainly do not qualify as spam. if anything, unsubstantiated derogatory, rhetorically deficient comments should qualify as spam.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
oh yeah, you can visit the RD test sites for great info as well. again, you’ll find Bel, Escort and V1 clearly on top w/ separation between them and the distant other competitors.<o:p></o:p>

^ Didn't say it was spam. Also didn't say it wasn't good info, b/c it is.

I said it looked like spam meaning the layout (spacing, format, first post, just registered, etc.) looked like what a spam reply typically looks like.
