Quote: I'd hate cleaning those wheels.
You wouldn't have to, that car isn't going anywhere fast enough to generate brake dust. The wheels will just grind the fenders away instead.

Okay, welcome to willkommen!
Sooo...got the bulbs in for the rear left brake and parking lights being out...easy, right? NAWWW...turns out it was a burnt wire...pulled it through and soldered directly to the board. FIXED

then, one bulb out on right...okay, no problem...WRONGGG...bulb melted into one of the socket, previous owner gave up on it. Used pliers and dremel to get the bulb out and the socket cleaned up and BAM, fixed. Just need to get the led upper brake light to work and license plate bulbs and lighting will pretty much be addressed.

Center console is falling apart, but I might delete the armrest anyway because it gets in the way of the ebrake when it's set low, and it's uncomfortable when it's set too high. B pillar material is pulling off, have to glue that...I threw a screw into the broken driver door handle...worked like a charm.

I messed with the door locks that aren't working...there's an adjustment knob I played with and got them both to lock and unlock, but there seems to be a correlation between one and the other and both never worked at the same time. I'm reading up, looking like there's a switch that senses that the door is open/closed I might need to source. The fact that at some point I got them BOTH to lock and unlock tells me that the actuator is actually not bad.

I checked the oil and it's due based on color/smell...so I'll tackle that, pull plugs to check them along with swapping coil packs. My CEL seems to be multiple misfires which can be felt with the somewhat rough idle...once you give it gas, it's good to go though so I'm guessing a tune up and new O2 sensors might solve that. Honestly, I was close to checking out some 18" oem wheels...but I think my money would be better spent keeping the car on a low budget and addressing making it run nicely.

So my final impression is that although it's got issues to address, and I got overwhelmed...that's part of the fun and the car is well put together and not too complex to take apart.

Oh. I figured that smell would be coming from the steering wheel (transfer from the driver's hands).

German cars love vacuum leaks and idle valve issues. If you're getting misfires at idle, I'd wager that it's not the O2 sensors (that would have its own code) and instead something to do with a lean condition surrounding the idle valve (clean or replace) or a leak in a vacuum line.

that was a code too, Sam...lean condition and maybe even something about idle valve...
I'll have to research cleaning that up...that would be great.

Just bought oil and a filter. At least I can do that.

Looking like there's more to it than just a cleaning...
I may order one...cheap enough and probably and likely to help clear some of my codes.
So why people buy a new PCV valve? --> PICS

Fixes one issue.. becomes two issues.. domino effect.
Should have just left it as it is.. if it runs better, it's going to totally take a dump.
Probably

maybe you're right...lol.
that would explain the rough idle and lean condition/misfires though!

Now that you've fixed the short in the tail lights, there's probably a bad ground in the engine.

Wait. This sounds familiar...

This actually seems like a fun project J. I enjoy trouble shooting and fixing stuff as well.

I still think you need wheels and cut springs though. OH and Tints too

The "short" in the taillights WAS the ground for the engine. ...

Probably not sold, only available and applied at dealership..
