Is it OK to remove the positive battery cover?

I'm trying to keep my engine bay consistent with black and grey so I removed the red positive battery cover. Is the cover there for a reason or is it just to notify the driver that it's the positive side?

Any one know where I can find a black one? Or a black battery cover as a whole?

It is there to prevent the battery terminals from "accidental" shorting. Like you are in a wreck, last thing you want is fire.

Wait how can the battery accidentally short?

Hood is metal. Try touching metal between two terminals and see what happens.

Hmm good point. Dammit

Edit: Hmm but my hood is padded with non metallic material. Oh well I'll find some way to cover it up with something black.

Cars have gone without battery terminal covers for a long time, though yes, they are there for a reason.

You can get a black cover, just be sure no one tries to jump start it without knowing which terminal is which (usually, a raised relief "+" sign is near by).

Do you know where I can get one? Searching it in google is pretty vague because blackberry battery keeps popping up.

No, no cover at all. But man, the picture there is the reason why I want a battery cover. Looks so much cleaner.

You shouldn't have a problem if you remove it. Today's cars are extremely electrical sensitive however, and it's very important not to have the wrong polarity. That being said, make sure you (and those who work on your car) are aware of which cable is used for positive. If you are unable to find a black batter cover, then remove the one you currently have, scuff it lightly with a scotch-brite pad, and spray paint it with a good quality black paint and re-install it.
