I'm just wondering how a 17 year old got a M3 to drive.

~15 years ago nearby was a horrific high speed single car accident where IIRC a ~17 year old died driving his dad's 911 left a backroad and hit a tree. He had his dad's permission to drive the 911. Friends of ours knew his parents and of course there was so much remorse and anguish but our friends wondered privately why his parent's let him drive a Porsche sportscar alone.

I see 'kids' in cars that I couldn't imagine having when I was that age.
Was talking to a teacher that briefly working the Highland Park area of Dallas & she said the kids coming out of the high school parking garage had cars she could only dream of owning. 16-18 year olds in all forms of Mercedes, BMW, Porsches, etc.

Yup another clown that thinks they are fast on public roads and dead last on the track. I hope my car never gets hit my an a-hole like that because his hospital bills will be the last of his worries.

I never loved the Panamera, until my friend let me borrow his 2018 Turbo (V8) for a weekend in Arizona a few years ago. Good gravy that car is FAST as fk and handles amazing. Changed my entire impression of the car. That being said, having yet to own a Porsche (something which was always one of my life goals- shoulda happened by now....) - I wouldn't want my first to be a 4-door Porsche of any kind. Let's see what the future holds, I would love to get my big break some how and be joy riding in a 2-door of some kind. One of my favorite Porsche's growing up was the 944 Turbo. I would not even mind slipping into a really nice example of those - although I have only heard maintenance on those is a nightmare, not surprising though.

Since I can't afford a 911, a super clean 944 or a nice Boxster/Cayman would do the trick.

I've driven a couple 944s over the years, turbo & NA
A super clean Turbo S gave me a real moment.
270* descending loop exit off the freeway, downshift 4th to 3rd, lots of boost lag, then the car was sideways
Fun time, but not so much in a car that wasn't mine.

Yeah I like the Cayman too - good friend has a 2011 and it's solid as hell and he often tells me, many people think its a (super expensive) 911. Lol. He Auto'x's it too and does really well with it.

Well, the 944 is a bastard child of Porsche, in most purists eyes. It primarily comes from the location of the engine. Majority are against front engine. Many (like my friend) even denounce the 944 and don't consider it a real Porsche.
Yikes. Glad you recovered from that. Yeah old, RWD turbo cars can be finnicky.

btw I did a very similar thing in my Supra back in the day, was on a circular on-ramp to highway cruising in a group and going kinda fast in the turn... I let off the gas a bit too much and the rear came out and I hit the guard rail. Around $4k in cosmetic damage.

Yeah, the 944/928 aren't loved by the purists. Which is odd because it was the only thing that saved Porsche throughout the 80s and into the 90s (then the Cayenne did it again, just... better).

I'll likely end up in a Cayman S in a few years if a project doesn't seem feasible. I love everything about the 987 - it's like I was made for it too, everything is right where it needs to be, visibility was fantastic, the shifter was perfect, steering was great, the seating position was spot on. I was used to the car after just a few corners. The same could not be said for the C6 GS I drove just before it - nothing in it felt right (or good).

My brother managed to do this in a Prelude He chucked it into an onramp around 45-50mph and held it there until the radius tightened. He let off, the back stepped out and he kissed the guardrail with the front end. It could've been way worse, if the car went wide he would've been backwards in the travel lanes on the highway.

dunno how you would do that in a FWD car... for my issue I was on the gas and let off, so the rear unloads and loses traction... hmmmm I suppose the same could happen in a FWD car, if you're going fast enough, causing the front to step out.

Lift off oversteer is probably the biggest thing that puts people into a crash barrier. Not something most people consider happening like they do with power oversteer. It's even more pronounced in mid and rear engined cars too haha.

^ But it's a blast when you can do it on command & keep it in line.

Keeping lift off oversteer in check and have it look cool is probably one of the hardest things to do in driving lol. Way easier to control power oversteer but that obviously requires RWD or AWD. Liftoff is the best way to get a FWD car to rotate though.

yeah, was a noob, first high-hp (480hp in 1999 was high) RWD car for me. But now, I'm a pro.

The ST can really produce lift off oversteer if you are not careful enough. Have to stay on the gas to keep the nose pointed so don't enter too fast or that's how you'll get yourself into a pickle.

I should say, I don't have much experience (almost none) driving a high-hp FWD car.

That's still high even today.

Most cars these days, even RWD ones, are tuned to understeer and avoid lift off oversteer because it's safer for those with more money than talent.
