The 3 series is a beautiful car. But I see so many of them around my neck of the woods. And like you said, maintenance cost is high. But I cant stand out when I see more 3 series then anything else around here.
M3 and 335i sound totally different. An exhaust that sounds great on the M3 doesnt always sound good on the M3.
From experience, the Bastuck is the best sounding exhaust for the 335i. IMO

BMW Performance Exhaust is great (I love mine) but the Boysen stock on the 335is is even greater. I find the Bastuck above a bit thrashy like the muffler delete option.
We hear it a lot in this video

Apparently there is a vacuum line going to the driver's side exhaust tip that closes a valve in the exhaust during idle and low revs to keep the exhaust quieter. People unplug the hose and stick a golf tee in to keep the pressure in the line and the valve stays open resulting in a deeper throaty sound from the exhaust at all rpm (slight) but most noticeably at low revs.
Conclusion is at the end and I have to agree.

There's something similar to the "golf tee" mod - you need to unplug a connector in a compartment in the trunk on the driver's side. I did it before and it definitely sounds different. I can't tell you if there is a negative side effect though.
In the end, the wife didn't like the extra rumble so I reconnected it (it's her car after all).

I would pull the plug on the left side of your trunk. I would not want to pinch a vaccum line. I did the trunk plug. It pretty much means your car will sound like it does in DS or sport mode all the time if you have an auto.
I heard it will throw a code too, but i cant see how it would affect anything with the car. I just had my first service done and there was no issues.
At 75 mph and under moderate top gear acceleration you will easily be able to tell the difference between a "stock" exhaust and the golf-tee mod.
