There was an article in my local paper that the Limited Slip in the M3 makes a loud “CLUNK” now and again.
BMW says it’s normal and nothing can be done about it.

I guess everyone’s “perfect” dream car isn’t the “Holy Grail” after all.

ugh, this makes my tranny issues seem like nothing!!

I am tied between getting a M roadster or a M3. This is NOT helping my decision!!!! man...

I feel for those who have lost their engine. At least thats something I don't worry about with my CLS.

CLS engine
CLS auto tranny

Hopefully its just because the M3 burns a bit of oil and the owners need to watch the oil level during the break in period. Or mabye a batch of bad parts. But who knows. Seems most of the car where low on oil.

Everyone go ahead and "wow" over this, but this is actually less frequent an occurance than our transmission failures you all like to ignore so much so you shouldn't even give it a second thought. I'm talking to those of you who like to say the tranny problem is nothing to worry about.

It may be less frequent than the loss of our tranny's, but I would take a blown transmission over a blown engine any day. I have a feeling that we will be seeing more of these stories about the M3 engine soon. A co-worker of mine has a 2002 M3 and is already complaining about oil consumption and a very rough idle.

At least our engines are rock solid....

I'd prefer neither.

I suspect a lot of it has to do with driver's not accustomed to high-revving motors

Also, the rev limit is 200 rpms above the constant rev limit. Maybe someone was parked there too long :o

Well, the reason the release of the car was delayed in the first place was because it was putting rods through the engine block when it hit the really high rpms.

Hmmmmm. Maybe they were under time pressure and didn't do enough to really fix the problem.

You're missing my point. My point is anyone who talked a big line of shit about how unimportant the tranny issue with our car is cannot rag on the BMW engine problem without looking like a hypocrite.

As for tranny vs. engine, as I said, I'd prefer NEITHER HAPPENED.

E46's are BADASS cars.

My friend Max got a silver convertible about 2 months ago.

Without a doubt the most badass car to ride around in. People were staring at us like crazy.

Didn't get to see how fast it was though, he doesn't even have 1000 miles on it yet!

I'm shocked about these engine problems!

Yeah my friend Andre has one and a friend of my dad's has one as well and I've never heard anything about this engine problem before either. Then again it is only 16 cars so far so I doubt many people even knew about it before that thread was posted today.

That was almost certainly a driving shool, anyone can go out on the track.

A couple hundred for the weekend, instructor...

Tons of fun, I recommend it. Any car is allowed. Contact your local BMWCCA or PCA

ahh I have to disagree with mr. ex-debate-team-captain,
a person who hangs out on www.dtmpower.net all too often

do you actually have figures to backup your claim,
that our tranny casualties out number m3 engine deaths?

Even if it is true, and you are correct, how many 2nd gen CL's have been produced total compared to M3's?
Since the M3 is a very limited production model, we're talking about different porportions of failures here right?

I heard that sound file...sounds...awful. Sounds like a lot of damage in there, maybe some connecting rods and cylinder head damage...or something. My God...sounds like the engine was neglected. The Ultimate Failing Machine.

No, the only BMW recall on the news was the faulty fan that can cause the cars to become engulfed in flames :o

"The 2001 highlights of the M year were :

Total deliveries of the 343bhp M3 models exceeded 15,000 cars, including 11,000 Coupés and 4,000 Convertibles."

snipped from ...

http://www.bmw2002.co.uk/news.htm

I thought someone wanted to know some production figures. Or was wondering...

Interesting to me, I didn't think they sold that many.

Depends on the failure...

Engine management unit -- limp home -- embarrassed, angry, and annoyed, but you get drop the sucker off and pick up a POS loaner [a loner with a loaner].

Most of the Acura tranny failures -- limp home -- come and share tails of woe with other "dirt nap" victims. (also pick up a POS loaner)

Engine -- toss rod, etc -- done and time for the "long walk"
Overheat -- blow engine or warp head -- eat shit and die.
Overheat in garage -- packing and/or en route to attorney to sue for fried kids and/or wife in upstairs bedroom...

Tranny -- depends... Most have managed to "limp to dealer"

Here is some more evidence that the m3's engine is failing http://www.bmwm5.com/vbulletin/showt...threadid=17318

Hopefully they have been remedied

When the E46 M3 production began there was a number of engine failures that all were due to faulty crankshaft bearings - they were not within the factory tolerance. BMW changed supplier and this should have cured the problem. The bent valves were due to the higher-than-spec tolerances on the faulty crankshaft bearing which at high revs were just enough to make the piston touch the valves.
Also, the engine specs that I posted indicated that if it spends too much time at near 8K, the motor will fail
