New Driver

My brother just started being able to drive by himself last week. Right now he is driving an old beat up 91 explorer. Nothing works on it so he is constantly trying to drive my cl. My parents have decided on getting him a honda due their reliability. I have found a 1999 acura integra ls sedan with 70,000 miles for $7,500. Just wanted to know if any of you had any thoughts on this car. Also, what do you think about the price and mileage. Thanks in advance.

Have your parents buy him a new BMW 3 series. Seems to be a good car for a teenager

Fantastic car, just have to keep it chained to the driveway before someone steals it.

really...is it that bad? I have heard people say something about these cars being stolen alot. I am sure that will make the insurance go sky high. Hopefully since I live in a small town we won't have to worry as much about it.

Once again it's nice to see that members here are so sure that a new driver is going to wrap any decently powered car they drive around a tree.

He can wrap an explorer around a tree just as easy. Heck, those things flip if you sneeze hard enough. Besides, he isn't really into speed...well I say that but who knows. Civic is ok...it is very boring. We are looking to spend around 6 to 7 grand so the selection is limited.

integra (2dr), civic, prelude, celica (?? debatable) - something along those lines would do just fine.

For 7500 you could probably find a pre 1998 accord (probably cheaper)... IIRC my cousin got a 97 w/ 70K miles for less then $7K... The theft rate on the accord would probably be lower.

But and integra sounds like a decent first car too (better then my 76 pinto station wagon was at least).

The price and the mileage sound ok to me, but run it thru edmunds and kbb to see if it's in the right price range.

I looked at kellebluebook.com and picked private party and got around $8,500. Retail was up around $9,500. I have noticed every accord or civic in our price range has over 100,000 miles. Are we stupid to buy a car with so many miles. I know that honda makes some solid cars that last upwards of 200,000 miles. I am so glad i have my cl. I have had 4 cars and this one has been the hands down favorite.

98-01 Civic would be a great first car for him and they do run forever! make sure it is a stick, everyone should have a stick as their first car. great learning experience and it will make him more alert while he is still learning to drive.

Civic or Accord would be much cheaper on gas and insurance. Less likely to get pulled over as well.

Thanks for all of the info....I think we are going to look at the acura. I have a feeling that he will get a civic or accord when it comes to decision time.
