love the 300zx, if its in good shape go for it...but they are hard cars to work on (cramped engine bays) and therefore can be costly for maintenance.
Maybe find a 240sx?

Know how to do repairs yourself? If so then a 96-97 m3 would be fun to tinker with. Parts are fairly cheap.
I can't really think of many reliable cars inthat range. Mustang be fun as well. I like the wrx idea if you want awd. Miata? Older CTS? Is300? Rx8?

thanks a ton crazy acura. i totally slept on the other options. I am fairly capable at repairs but i dont want to be repairing my car every 3-4 months.
im kind of leaning with just picking up a beater and riding on the TL a bit longer till i can upgrade to something that was made in this millenium.
ill check out the cars you recommended, minus the m3, i keep reading about their subframe problems

i know a Lexus tech that advises heavily against manual IS300s. dont remember the exact issues. maybe something with premature clutch wear? dont quote me on that. he was telling me all this over a year ago when i was looking at an IS for myself.

i was looking at WRX's in that price range 02-03...
even considered the revamped 04'.. found a few around 8k....
its not an STi but its AWD, turbo and manual...
glad i landed my 03' AV6 6spd though... loving it.
just save up and keep the TL till it dies like you said.. nobody will treat the mean green with the respect it deserves

I'm wih you on this vote. 300ZX or 240SX SE. I had 95 240SX SE LSD in h.s. back in 96 and the car was great for having a truck motor. 0-60 7.5sec 1/4 15.8. It was a great car. The suspension is very firm so if comfort is a must, you might want to look elsewhere.

Chalk another vote up for the WRX.
Didn't Mitsubishi make an AWD coupe around the same time as the 300ZX? Forget what it was called, but it was praised well. Not thinking about the 3000GT, the other one with the funky windows.

Someday, an RS6 Avant+
The WRX can be modified and brought up close to STI performance levels for not a lot of money.
But overall, I like your idea of keeping and saving.
