Need a car for $4-5K

I am looking for a car for a close friend. She is looking to spend no more than $4-5K. She is looking for a simple reliable car that is very easy on gas. She is thinking a civic. Any other ideas?

i was thinking maybe a hyundai elantra? everyone knows hyundai is on the way up to the top and the elantra is cheap and easy on gas, yet doesn't have the crazy high resale value of the civic

i'd say an earlier model Integra.(of course not a Type R) but you can get in a early-mid 90s in good condition low mileage for that kind of change.

civic, lots of parts available and it gets good gas mileage if properly maintained.
