AMG vs M

Don't know if this has been posted but which one would you guys prefer and why? I was watching a video on McLaren's and they mentioned that the McLaren F1's/GTR's had BMW powered engines. Now I see in the showrooms that MercedesMcLaren are working together with the new SLR. Who owns McLaren? Also is McLaren a car made in the UK or Germany?

Heres the video that mentions the BMW engine.

I'm biased towards M, and while I appreciate AMG, I just don't think it compares to M. There's a reason the E46 M3 is going down in history as one of the best cars. I've driven an E30, 36, and 46 M3 and a C55 AMG, and hands down, no question, the BMWs were just better cars all around. The C55 was fun, and I'd take one, but it wasn't stellar in all parts. The plus side of AMG is that they offer it on all MB models, so you have a lot of flexibility.

And this year, MB is taking that title from BMW. The e90 M3s are getting lukewarm reviews while the c63 AMGs are getting positive responses. It Handles better, is brutally fast, and it's not so timid like the predecessor it replaces. IMO last year, BMW M> MB AMG. This year MB AMG> BMW M

Haven't driven this years at all, and I doubt I will anytime soon, but I was very dissapointed with the reviews of the E90 M3. Which way would you throw this (thinking total package, not just HP numbers) - E46 M3 or C63 AMG?

It's impossible to go wrong with any of these(AMG vs M).I really wouldn't mind an S65 or a SL55 in my driveway. But I always felt like Mercedes AMGs were more luxo-cruiser missiles than true performers.Kudos to AMG with their new 6.2 liters engines, they're very impressive.Talking about the M's it looks more like the driver is more involved for some reason.I've had a great opportunity a while back to drive a e39 m5 and to get driven in both an e55 and a e60m5.The amg is for sure more luxurious, more calm and less involving. The m's are the real kick in the pants.Yes,the new M5 is much more complicated than that sublime car the E39 was,(which I fell in love with)but is still the benchmark although slower than an E63.But at the wnd it all comes to which one you would pay from your own pocket.

Seriously debating between getting an E39M5 and E46M3 next year. I loved driving both cars, and I'm jealous of anyone who gets to drive one regularly. The M5 blew me out of the water - i couldn't find a flaw driving it. I have these kick ass twisty roads by my parents, and it just was sheer pleasure to drive. The E46 was exactly what I expected and I see myself in one more than the M5

I think you may be reffering to their F1 team. I could be wrong but I don't think MB or Vodafone have a ownership stake in McLaren. Obviously they work closely with MB (F1, SLR) but Vodafone is their main F1 sponsor. Or at least I thought.

MB has already announced that they will not be working with McLaren on the SLR replacement.

+1 don't really care what any reviews say, manual gearbox = ftw. Ferrari can put a gear system straight out of their F1 car into the F430 or whatever, I don't care, I'd still get the manual.

Having driving regularly a W203 C32 AMG ... never had a chance to test drive a M3 of any generation (stupid Canadian dealerships in Windsor ) but based upon my limited exposure sitting in an M3 along with overall negative impression of the C32 ... M all the way. I'm not too particular with "just because it's a stick" debate -- most of us cannot extract the 100% out of a car unless you're on a track (and I do not) so driving a stick argument is purely subjective / personal preference.

And definitely agree the M 'feels' more raw / involved in driving than an AMG. But the new AMG engine, as mentioned, seems things are more level a playing field ... interesting.

Vodafone is a formula one sponser for the team McLaren Mercedes. Vodafone was a Ferrari formula one team sponsor for formula 1 last year which has now switched to McLaren.

McLaren i believe is a separate entity or maybe a small ownership from Mercedes but they do have a close relationship in racing. word is that Mercedes was not happy with the outcome of the SLR and is switching to another high performance company t co-engineer another supercar.

Mclaren did build the McLaren F1 super car and it is powered by a BMW motor.

My main reasons have little to do with track performance - I have tracked in the past but never consistently - but, it's nice to have that option too. Even on regular public roads, I just like the feeling of being in total control of the gear changes. I mean, everything is under my control - I am in direct control of the drivetrain of the car. I just love that feeling. I don't like drive-by-wire at all though. But, it's not as bad as auto/F1.

You guys need to drive the real AMG cars. The E55, CL55/65, SL55/65, S55/65. Those cars are just crazy. No manual's but you don't need them.

From my experience the M cars are geared for more overall sport performance.
The AMG cars are more for straight line speed & comfort.

Well, I would normally say M....I mean I've had enough of their cars already.

But the way things are going, I'm starting to very much lean toward AMG.

That's changing, just by looking at the E63 and new C63.

I've driven an E55 - it felt like a powerboat.

in a straight line race, the amg's have it. but my vote are the the m line because they are terrific all around sports cars. they can brake, turn, accelerate with the best of them right out of the factory. the new m1 should be intriguing

The audi's are very nice cars but from what I hear people say they are a bit heavier when driving. Also people say that the new Mercedes S65 AMG is as fast as a porsche, a freakin full size sedan!!!

yup, but the m1 should be out by mid to late 2008 as an 09 model (according to worldcarfans.com)

I'M WITH THE AUDI S/RS line all the way as well, but the thread was asking about M vs AMG

I've said it before and I'll say it again - I don't consider AMG and M to be comparable. Different markets, different applications.

Well, bmw is pretty much always been my favorite auto manufacturer. I have to constantly remind myself that was the bmw of old though. Anywhere in the 80's, 90's, and even early 2000's I would be in a M car hands down. I'm not so sure now.
I like the M5 and M6 still, but the M3, which seems to be the real sporting car doesn't quite have me sold.

Good thing I can't afford either.

Who do you compare AMG and M then? They're both similarly priced and obviously targeting the same people.

My order would be RS4>M3>C63. Not that I wouldn't take the C63 if given the chance. I just really really working the clutch and rowing the gears. After driving an automatic for a while its just not the same. But again, for a C63, I would compromise.
