My car has bullet holes in it!

So I was at mission valley mall in San Diego having dinner at Ruby's around 930pm last night with a coworker. When I came back to my car, which was parked in the parking structure I noticed a crime scene had been taped off pretty close to my car with police scouring the area and evidence markers on the ground. As I drove off to a nearby gas station to fill up, I look at the rear passenger door and there's a fatty hole thru it. WTF!! So I run around to the other side and the bullet had passed thru the other door. The hole is big enough for me to stick my pinky in! Fucking crazy! Well it's crazy to me anyways bc nothing like this has EVER happened to me so I kinda freaked out when I saw it until I put 2+2 together and realized it probably happened at the mall. So I flagged down a cop who took an evidence report on it (who were total dicks to my coworker and me but that's a different issue). Apparently it was a drug deal went bad.

Now I have to figure out how to handle this with my insurance. I'm glad it's not my car but it's a rental car and I didn't get any additional coverage on it

Good thing you weren't in the car when it happened. And while dealing with the rental company and insurance may end up being a pain, it's still probably better than it isn't your car.

Good to hear you're ok. Did the round cross the door into the cabin?

I tried searching for the story in news sites for SD but didn't find anything.

Good thing it happened to a rental instead. You should be good there.

I'm definitely grateful I wasn't hurt and it wasn't my car. The round went thru the rear of the cabin (door-to-door). I'm not looking forward to dealing with insurance companies. Maybe I should add full coverage thru my rental car and return the car and act like I don't know what happened

Was your rental business related? If so, does the company have some sort of coverage/internal policy that will take up the difference?

There's this thing called fraud which would likely be a good reason for you not to try that.

Plus, say you add full coverage today (4/16) or tomorrow (4/17). Not gonna help you much on a police report from 4/15. Then they'll actually have evidence to arrest you for fraud.

amazing, isnt it?

also, to OP, you seem pretty calm considering this incident may rob you of $500.

I'm going to talk to them today since they have me staying out here in a hotel for work. I don't think they'd technically be liable since it was after hours.

I guess the drugs and violence here is a lot worse than I thought. I still haven't found anything in the local news about it which is weird. I want to get out of here and back to Irvine

Yah. I'm just trying to count my blessings. I don't see how the rental co would know about the police report but I don't know if want to risk that.

I've been having horrible week. There was another incident this week also in which I could have been seriously hurt and I was lucky to escape that with minimal damages and only a bloody lip.

You should definelty check. For us, on businsess travel, we don't accept any of the insurance options. Any damage is covered by the company/travel agency policies.

Time of day should not matter - you are there on business, got the rental for business reasons and would not have been "invlolved" except for the fact that you were sent there on business.

Your company policies may vary of course, but you should check to make sure.

Did you use a credit card for the rental? Many cards have their own insurance or protection program that covers car rentals. I once had a rental car that was broken into. They smashed the driver side window, but my credit card company covered the damages.

Ok, so I talked to my company and they are not willing to extend coverage. Basically they said "they're not liable" and that I should be careful and not eat at that restaurant again . I was hoping they'd help me out as a "goodwill" since I'm here because of them...guess not. I did call Visa and start a claim with them as they are willing to cover up to my deductible amount if I fall under their conditions so let's see how that goes.

definitely check what your company policy is. Whenever we get a rental for my company its covered by our policies. Even if I only name myself on the agreement with the rental co, any person that has been cleared to drive our company vehicles can drive it and its covered

Edit: just saw your post, so youre on a company trip yet they wont cover it when you were out to dinner? sounds like bullshit to me, if youre on a work trip you cant just make dinner in your kitchen right?

Is this a serious reply? I'm wondering if that sucker punch to the head may have knocked some screws loose.

If you go to the rental company with a damaged car they are going to ask to see the police report for said damage. If you do not produce one then you will be liable for the damage. It's not like you can just take out the insurance then show up with a damaged vehicle with no documentation. I think they caught onto that scam in the 80's.

I'm thinking you should cut the trip short and head home to get some rest...

^Yah I was kind of talking out of my ass...my point was I don't think they would know about the report unless I furnished it, but doesn't really matter. I'm not going that route..way too many holes in that story (no pun intended).

I'm on a company trip but it's my 'personal' rental that has nothing to do with the company. I just didn't want to bring my car down to this area (for obvious reasons) and had some upgrades to take care of. The issue isn't who's car it is, it's that I'm out here bc of my company. Even though I got a big fat NO from my company I'm going to look into our CPP.
