m3 on SPEED

Hey did any of you guys see the review of the m3 on the SPEED channel yesterday? They reviewed the Land Rover Discovery too (which, personally, I think is a piece of shit for the money).

Anyway, I knew the m3 was awesome before watching the show, but now im in fuking LOVE...they said that the smg system was better than the ferrari system (dont flame me on this, thats just what they said ).

Considering all the stuff you get, i think m3 is actually a pretty good deal, with the smg, of course.

How do you guys feel about it? What are the major problems associted with it (other than the exploding engine...)

im really ignorant about porche's...what year 996 are you talking about? and how much power

i really dont like porches...i dont think they pack enough of a punch for the money...320 hp is great, but not really for the price, and the lack of comforts of the base models. I like the m's because they are comfortable, and packed with cool toys to play with

996 is the new bodystyle and the new ones have a good power increase.

What does the BMW have that the porsche doesn't? Esp. when it comes to comfortablility and cool toys. Other then SMG.

The base porches dont have much stuff...you have to pay a whole lot of money to get the premium seats, sounds, navi, etc...and they are EXPENSIVE. Im not saying that the BMW options are cheap in any way, but they are cheaper than the porche's options, by far...I would never want to PAY for floor mats on a $70k car...

Of course, on the road course, Im sure the porche will outperform the newer m3s (e36 were the best models for the track, right?). So, if you do want to race on the track or whatever, i guess the porche is right for you. Personally, i'd rather have a really fast and really comfortable road car

A warranty.

Ever see how much a brake job costs on one of those things? (911/996)

BMW now sell all of the vehicles with free maintenance. Which includes brakes/tranny/oil changes....

porsches have just as much warranty as bmw's. And they also do free services except for the brakes from what I hear. And a brake job isn't much. You are changing pads not the whole entire brake system. Sure the porsche is more expensive, but we were talking about a used one, not new. So you would be able to get some of the good options too.

Yea i saw some of the porches on autotrader.com

Not to bad...looking at about $60k for a 996 with 20-30k miles

I dunno though, i'd still be reluctant about a porche, especially a used one--i'd have to do some serious checking before buying a used sports car. But if you have that kind of cash, i guess some minor maintenance issues wont be a big deal

but for the same $60k, you can get a (nearly) fully loaded m3 coupe, complete with smg, and those wonderfull 19s (which i like better than the turbo porche wheels)

or you can just scoop one up with about 5k miles or less for high $40's, low $50's. That way the original owner absorbs some depreciation as well as the luxury and gas guzzler taxes...

From performance to looks. M3 will never beat a Porsche period.

I was talking used, why I said NO Warranty! Just as he was saying he'd buy a used one. Since a new 911 (the cheapest) is $75k (ish). No where near $55k of a M3.

lol, you have never owned a porsche and taken it in for service then. $800-$1000 easy for oil/brake job together.

Don't forget the Porsche is used. You'd have to buy a warranty.

My family has owned a few. They ended up taking them to a private mechanic once the warranty was up.

The service is very $$ on Porsche, especially with a porsche certified mechanic at a dealership.

Don't forget all new BMWs include all basic services now. Oil/Tranny/Brakes for the warranty of the vehicle. A big saving when compared.

Quite good points...buuut if I were in a position to buy a sports car for $60k, i'd first insure that i would be willing to live with the maintenance costs, provided that the performance is actually worth it (i.e. wouldnt pay that much for anything that isnt sub 5.0 0-60, and at least in the low 13s and high 12s)
