Am in the only one confused by a study that shows problems per 100 vehicles with most of the numbers being over 100?

So the industry average is 126 out of 100 vehicles have problems?

Someone explain what I am missing...

EDIT - nevermind, I see that is the number of problems per 100 vehicles...not number of vehicles with problems.

Does anyone think there is enough of a sample size for 2013? I don't. Obviously jd powers does, but does anyone, except the manufacturers who pay dearly really care?

The 2013 JD Powers survey is based on vehicles bought in the 2010 MY. So yes, I would suspect there is sufficient sample size for their survey.

Whether you care or not, YMMV.

These numbers should be taken in stride - I researched JD Power's figures before, and these "problems" can really include anything, including problems reported where nothing is actually wrong. Example, there have been rattles reported that turned out to be the customer's sunglasses. Not saying the figures aren't useful, just keep an open mind while digesting them

Looks like first place to last place is .71 defects per car to 2.2 defects per car & someone not liking where a button is placed is a "defect".

Hey just noticed your TL's were all 6MT's. Maybe you could help out the guys in the other thread by doing Englishtown getting some times & MPH data that they are all speculating about. Be nice to see at least one of you actually putting your car on the line instead of just quoting Magazine performance times.

Its an excellent facility & a really good event. Maybe some of the local Acurazine guys will show the flag for Acura.

They ran the NHRA summer nationals there for years, don’t know if they still do. I ran a lot of cars in both super stock classes & bracket races over the years. Also ran a 33 Ford 3 window coupe for about 10 years in the annual old time drags event. First time I ran at Englishtown the pits were not even paved, they have come a long way over the years.

Way better then anything we have down here except for Charlotte Motor Speedway. CMS would be a 400 mile round trip for me so it’s a non starter.

Interesting, but I am not a fan of including that in the quality numbers. This could be a combination of things, from people not really learning how to use the tech in their car to just crappy tech in the car. That is like saying just because the car does not ride well in the drivers opinion that it is a initial quality problem.

Ride is one of the points on the survey. Its really hard to get more subjective that that, well maybe wind noise.

Problem is the JD Powers reliability report does not have much to do with key reliability measures.

One of the few things I like about consumer reports is the annual car issue, I find that gives better insight into real world reliability of owners, try even that can be skewed, but I think it is a better indicator.

Agree. The number of responses start to get high enough to bring some robustness to the results. However, there is still a self-selection issue (non-randomness) because readers/owners decide on their own whether or not to respond. But I have found that generally their results correspond with what I've observed in the "real world.

+1, over the decades I've found CR to be the most representative to what myself, relatives, and friends have had with vehicles long term.
Still the best source for long term reliability reports
