They really need to sell more of the RL, so when I'm ready to buy a used 05 in a couple of years, I'll have my choice of colors on the used car market

For the third consecutive month, the 2005 Acura RL set a new monthly sales record, up 203.7 percent compared to 2004. RL sales of 1,371 units exceeded the previous January record of 1,136 set in 1997.

The TL performance luxury sedan was Acura's top-selling model for the 16th straight month with January sales of 4,753, up 2.2 percent over last year.

Looking in the RL forum, they are selling under MSRP already. Guys are gettin quoted at 46.9k. And sales were up compared to the OLD RL but sales are down already, from 1900 units to 1300 units. THat is a big dip for such a new car.

How is selling 500 less units a "big dip" - considering that the old RL was selling around 400 units per month for the past 3 years...

he's talking about a NEW car...just released not being popular...

usually a new version of a car is more exciting and the market likes it

Compare sales of the NEW RL with those of the outgoing model...if those numbers don't tell you it's popular, I don't know what else to tell you.

I've seen a total of five '05 RL's since they came out and there are about four of them sitting on the Acura dealer's lot as of today. What I see more is the new Cadillac STS, I see around three or four of them everyday.

5o g's is pretty steep for a V-6. Love the car but, this car should be priced in the low to mid 40's not 50's.

I think a starting price in the high 40 would've been OK, like 46-48K. But not starting at under 50K.

These are figures for December, January 05 isn't listed yet. You can visit the individual press rooms for the brands to see January's number.

You can see for yourself. The usual monthly sales leader is still the E-Class, followed by the 5-Series, then the Cadillac STS, then the new Acura RL. That puts it at #4....before the redesign, the RL was close to last place, only outselling the M45 in this price segment.

Lexus= RWD
BMW =RWD
Infiniti= RWD
Mercedes = RWD

That is the competition.....All offering gas guzzling V-8's with extreme torque and priced in the 50's. Not saying the RL is bad but, they would have positioned themselves better in the market place by pricing this car in the 40's to mid 40's.

The reality is that the RL may do better in the north but, for places like Florida and California it is really going to be a toss up.

This is how many RL's are currently in stock at 3 of the biggest Acura dealers in Atlanta.

Baranco Acura - 10
Nalley Acura - 15
Ed Voyles Acura - 19

Lot of cars on a lot for being a new model.

It's not really the amount of cars on a lot that tells you how well/poor a certain model is selling. It depends on how long they sit there. You can go to any Mercedes dealership and see E-Class sedans, and just look at how many of them Mercedes sells.

for the money i think you can get a better car than the RL. I think a high percentage of buyers are honda or acura loyalists. i dont see anyone going from a 5 series or E class to an RL

Very true...but for the first 6 months I never saw that many sitting on the lot of a dealer.

I personally like the car alot, but I wouldnt buy one for the money. To me, the outside looks alot like an Accord though. If I am going to spend $50,000+ on a car, I want it to be something that stands out more than the everyday car that you see 200 times on your way to work.

The dealership out here never carries either the RL or the NSX in stock. They claim that those cars just dont sell. I have only seen 1 of the new RLs in this dealership and thats was becuase it was already sold and they had to order it in. I had a chance to sit in it and after some convincing they let me take it out for a quick spin. The car is nice but I dont think its all that Acura hyped it up to be....

I'm pretty sure that from March on (when the new models will be available) both the GS and the Infiniti M will out sell the RL. Even the A6 might get ahead of it. All 3 of those have models that you can get from 40-45K. Since Acura aimed at 20K/yr 1600-1800/mo for the rest of the MY will get them to their goal but that will probably mean last place in this segment as far as sales volume.

Come to think of it, I've also seen quite a few more of the new STS on road than the new RL. Didnt the RL debut first??

I too will be in line for a sub $30K used 2005 RL in 2007. I like the fact that they come fully loaded, no options, nav included and everything!

You would think so, but the RL has been selling a little better than the A6 in December and January. And mind you, Audi is looking at selling 24K units of A6 annually whereas Acura is looking at 20K units.

But thats also why they are 48,900 new... (being loaded)

However invoice on the RL is 43,536 so give it a few months and i bet you will be able to haggle them down to 44.

Autoweek had a good artcile on it with some feedback from actual RL buyers

I love my CLS and I'm planning on keeping it for awhile, but the next time around, I'm buying used... Let someone else take the hit on the initial depreciation (Like I did with the tbird).

Would you mind buying a new Maxima? I'd like to see that thing discontinued.

I never really understood this considering you're paying for all the options to be standard. I can see liking that a fully loaded car only tops out at 50k but I'd rather have the option of choosing what comes in the car. If it doesn't catch on it will be a great used car, much like the current m45/q45.
