How to go about transaction - shipping wheels

Hey guys,

I am new to this.

Lined up a buyer over on a lexus forum to buy my wheels. Im in Miami, he's in Alabama. We worked out a price. It is my absolutely bottom. I will be pulling the trigger with him.

I found that Fedex has decent rates for shipping wheels...is there somewhere better?

Also, what is the safest way of collecting $$ from the sale without paying fees (paypal). Does he pay first, then I ship? Possibly setup a wire?

Also - if he returns the wheels due to dissatisfaction (for any reason), I will be in the process of moving 1,300 miles.

Thanks!

My advice is not to ship. It is a pain in the ass, you don't get cash in hand, and if they get damaged in transit or he flakes out then you're going to have to do all kinds of bullshit.

Miami is a big city. New York is even bigger. Might be best to bring them with you and sell up north.

got it. thanks

but, is it uncommon to get paid first, then ship?? if so, should i use paypal?

I dont have the extra transport space to bring to NYC, so will have to sell in Miami over the next few weeks.

I had to ship wheels... and yes, it's a huge pain. I bought large boxes and put each one in a box... so shipped him 4 boxes. It was expensive to ship (don't remember exactly) but he was willing to pay.

If you want to protect yourself, do an eBay auction with a Buy It Now at your agreed upon price plus the shipping price. Upload a shitload of pics, list all details in the auction and say sale is final... have him Buy It Now... and you should be safe(r).

I've sold and shipped wheels/tires a few times without any issues. Since in your case (from what I remember) you only have wheels, no tires, you'll have to put them in boxes. Shipping is going to run you anywhere between $100-$150 depending on weight and which shipper you use. Do not ship them until he pays you. The easiest and safest way is PayPal. He can pay you without a fee if he clicks "gift" but I'm warry of this because I believe it won't protect you or him if something goes wrong with the transaction. Just work the 3% fee into your price and you won't have to worry about trying to avoid it. Sounds like you guys already have a deal worked out so I'm not sure you'll be able to do that so you'll likely just have to take the 3% hit. Make sure you pack the wheels really well paying extra special attention to the face of the wheel. I'd avise cutting out round pieces of cardboard the diameter of the wheel to protect it in case anything penetrates the box you pack it in.

thanks guys.

Going to see if he's okay with payment first. Otherwise, I may try to bring him to auction for buy it now -- which may be a turn off.

He can transfer money through PayPal without doing fees, give him your email and he can send it like if he were transferring his family money. No fees.

Someone had a thread in the BM, look into Grey Hound shipping, he said that was cheap.

But if he's willing, ask him about shipping charges and ask him to pay for insurance in case they are damaged by the shipping company.

Just ask him to pay and then ship them ASAP and give him a tracking number. If he doesn't go for it try eBay, but then you have to deal with eBay's outrageous fees.

wait so you were planning on shipping the wheels then get payment after he gets the wheels? NEVER ship anything before you recieve payment. im a huge wheel whore so ive shipped plenty of wheels. i always go through paypal. its the best way to protect yourself and the buyer. if im selling the buyer normally takes the paypal fees or we split them. as far as shipping i always just take the wheels to fedex or ups and get them to box them up. i watch them box them up so i know its done correctly. for 4 wheels its usually around like someone said earlier $100-$150. but i always factor that into my price when i post them for sale.

If hes not OK with paying before he gets the wheels (like a normal transaction is handled), DONT sell to him.

TBH I didn't read the whole thread, just bits and pieces

I've shipped a wheels in the past. Sign up for a Fed Ex account. It gives you discounts on shipping.

I'm late to this thread. I've sold about ten sets of wheels, mailing most of them, one even to an AFO address in Italy. Paypal payment first, then ship. Buyer pays shipping costs. Next! Pack well, INSURE the package in case of trouble, and FedEx Ground FTMFW, it's all I use.

How are you guys sending money with no fees through Paypal?

I completed a transaction the other day and no matter how I did it (money owed, gift, family, etc... I tried every option) the fee was there... it was just a matter of if I paid it or the recipient got it deducted from the gross. This was about 4 days ago...

If you send money as a gift there is no 3% fee, at least the last couple times I did it.

If your using PayPal for purchase transactions NEVER send as a gift. Because if there's any issue PayPal won't do anything because it was a gift. The only time I send as a gift is if I'm just sending money to my sister in college.

50 cents to list, but something like 10% will be deducted from selling price by eBay as part of their final value fee. There is a way to minimize this though.

Let's say you are planning to set Buy It Now (BIN) price at $800 for the wheels plus whatever shipping is (usually $100-$150). Instead of paying approx. $80 to eBay, make the Buy It Now price $100 or $150 and then put the shipping fee at $800. By reversing it, you'll only pay eBay $10 or $15 instead of $80.

Or you could just factor in the eBay fee into to BIN price. So instead of $800 BIN, it'll be $889 BIN price - approx. $89 in eBay fee = $800 net to you.

Didn't see it mentioned, but whenever I deal with PayPal payments I always make sure the person is PayPal verified too.

Just go to a local wheel shop and see if thy have matching diameter and width wheel boxes, possibly pay them to ship if they do that.

Yeah, a few days ago when I sent the money I tried it as a gift, but all it did was default the fee to me instead of the recipient, so he could receive the full amount as the "gift". Was still a fee though...

Odd.

I'm sure some people would be like cool, wheels for $100-$150 but then be like at $800 for shipping. But if they really thought about it, they end up paying be the same thing if it was $800 for wheels and $100-$150 for shipping.

I know it's been done this way before, but not necessarily with wheels.

Just make sure you state that the $800 shipping and handling fee is required no matter what in case someone local thinks they can do local pick up and get a set of wheels for $100.

hey guys...looking for advice for first time ebay seller. right now i have 60 views, and 1 watcher. its been up for 4 days, with three days remaining. is this a low count? its listed as a "buy it now" and "make me an offer". Should i raise the buy it now price from 700 to 800, and tack on an starting bid price with reserve? and if i do that can i still extend the auction from 7 days to 10 days, allowing me this upcoming weekend?

no idea what im doing here. thanks!

On eBay, my experience is that there's little to no action until the last 24 hours.

I shipped wheels with tires worth 1600 shipped through fedex and didn't send anything till I got all my money. I went to a rim shop and they had boxes that 22"s came in just laying around and he gave them to me. Turns out a perfect fit for 19"s with tires, with a little gap all around. Then filled the entire box with foam peanuts.

Btw you can send money through paypal without paying fees...

So the auction is ending tomorrow. Do i keep my finger on the button and extend an extra 3 days if i dont receive any bids with 1 minute left? or can i extend the auction after it closes?

(This is a buy it now listing, with no make me an offer option)

nevermind....for reference...

if you have a buy it now auction, you can modify pricing and duration up until 12 hours remaining. once from there, everything is locked in, and it is out of your control.

Ebay new FFV is on the total price including shipping, this no longer works.
