How does a Supra rate?

I was curious about how powerful is a Supra supposed to be? I was pulling away from a light yesterday when this guy in one decided to punch it. I hit my a/c switch (turned it off), moved it to ss and did the same. By the time I hit the top of second gear I reeled him in and when we hit 80 I was at least a car length ahead and shut it down. Aren't they supposed to be pretty quick?

the sequential bi-turbo supras are fast as all hell. the non-turbos....eh, not so much. a bi-turbo supra can easily be brought to 600-1200 horsepower with money, time and skill. but you'll know when you find one of those

Well depending on what year and if it is TT or not they are where as low as 145hp in the early 80's to 320hp in the last imported version to the USA. So more than likely it was NOT the TT version so you may have been racing a lame 200hp-220hp version if it was newer looking.

It probably was a non-twin turbo Supra. A 'TT' model would have left you right when the TL tranny shifted to 2nd gear. He would have been out of site with the quickness.

Well what did it sound like? I belive the TT has dual exhaust while the regular has one sided. Also, you cannot mistake the sound of turbo. You would have known.

I had an 89 Turbo (previous generation) that made 278 rwhp. A TL would have no chance against it. BTW, don't bother pushing the A/C button, the compressor automatically dis-engages when WOT is detected or revs rise to a pre-dermined point, possibly the 4700 rpm V-TEC switch-over.

Kilroy - That's good to know. My windows were rolled up and I had the music up so I didn't hear anything. I always had the impression that they all were pretty quick. I thought maybe this one may have been beat to death or something. It's interesting to hear that there are some that aren't so quick. It didn't have any markings on it other that the Toyota emblem on the back.

yeah, the single turbo supras were pretty decent. the bi-turbos are all the sweeter though. there was an interesting mod i have seen elsewhere, where the alternator was also disengaged from the system under WOT, making the car rely on the battery for all power. this reduced load on the engine (simple explanation is that due to back-EMF forces in electrical system, it takes more mechanical force to turn the alternator as power demand increases). this yielded some modest but noticeable gains. of course this has nothing to do with supras, just thinking about A/C disengaging at WOT. sorry... :P

There are no stock single turbo Supras. There is a twin turbo and a N/A version/nonturbo
There are of course single turbo conversion kits that can replace the twin which actually can improve the performance of the car

Also, to whomever said the Twin Turbo Cars have dual exhaust. All Stock MKIV supras have single exhaust. If you see any dual exhaust on a supra its aftermarket.

What year Supra? Mark IV (the last one) had 225hp non-turbo, 320hp twin turbo.
O-60 in under 4 to 5 flat.
Modded, Supras are some of the absolute fastest cars in the WORLD. Especially from a roll with a single turbo.
Hell for 2k (BPU mods), you can get near 400hp TO THE WHEELS!
Racing and turning the A/C switch off is :ghey: .

Mark IV Supra is twin turbo. As stated, going to single Tubo yields as much horsepower as your wallet can afford. 500-600hp daily driven Supras with no reliability problems are the norm, not the exception.

Yes the MKIII did have a single turbo version. I thought perhaps the poster was strictly talking about the MKIV. If not, then my bad.

Not entirely true. The Supra at the time reach around $43k. The new VETTE does 0-60 in 4.3 seconds and is around $45k. The Lotus Elise is around $39k and it does 0-60 in around 4 seconds and would mop the floor with the Supra around any roadcourse. We must not forget about the new turbo terrors, the EVO and STi...they are highly moddable and fast if done right. Too bad we didn't get the GTR...that is the definitive KING of Japanese Drag racers

If you were any where near that supra in a race, then it was not a stock mkIV. My friend has a TT supra with only exhaust, and we raced, or we said we were going to race, after about 10 seconds I might as well have parked my car on the side of the street and walked the rest of the way, and then we hit a few turns...or i should say, he hit a few turns and waited for me to catch up. Those things are insanely quick and have great handling.

it's pretty fucking simple people...no if's/ands/or buts....it was a recent gen supra non-turbo. We can beat them stock vs. stock...but don't even fucking think about racing the TT.

I actually saw a last generation TT Nissan 350Z last night. That thing is scary fast even standing still. It could take on a SUPRA.

It looked close to this:

I wasn’t even going to look at that thing to race. Even in a Vette, I wouldn’t mess around with these road missiles. or you'll be

Not to split hairs but that's a 300ZX twin turbo not a 350Z.
