got stop for tint at 2am
They are cops, they can do whatever they want. Technically the tint is illegal in the front so you can either pay the ticket or remove the 35% in the front (here they'll waive the fee if you remove the tint)...
Exactly. Not all cops are equal.
They "can" ticket you. They don't have to. It's called discretion. It's ultimately up to the cop on what he or she wants to enforce.
First guy gave you a break, second guy didn't. It's how it works.

VA cops hate illegal tint, the main reason for the 50% tint is so it's not completely black inside the car when an officer walks up to the window for a stop. Then would probably be driver safety as the windows are harder to see out of at night than 50% tint.
tnl_tsx, not bagging on your or anything, but it's just one of those things you can't complain. the cop can't be blame as an asshole because the state made that law and the cop's job is to enforce it.
I wonder how much money the government makes from "upsell" of other fines when they stop someone for tint or broken taillight, etc....it would be interesting to see a statistic of how much revenue comes from small time stops such as this.
That's why i'll remove the front tint so then they won't stop me again. I only complained 'cause he was driving in the opposite direction, make a u-turn in 45 mph speed limit street and gave me a ticket.
At 2am it is usually a pretext for something else - DUI, etc.
VA cops are picky like that. I got stopped in FFX county 2 years ago for tint even though I live in MD where my car is registered also. He said I either take it off and come to court with proof or pay a fine, they were obviously more concerned with money than safety.
Sad but so true.
