Foolish to buy 2004 GTO?

I have heard the first year GTOs had tons of problems is this true? These cars totally tanked in value. I can get one with under 10k miles for around $19k on eBay.

About the same locally for under 20k miles.

Seems like the best performance bang for the buck out there right now as long as it isn't gonna die on me every 2 months.

So... what's the story?

Its Australian made

But yes the '05 GTO is much better than the '04. Lots of subtle build improvements

My old coworker had an 04 GTO and I don't think he had any issues, though he only kept it for a year...

Same deal here; a coworker of mine uses his 04 (which he bought new) as a daily driver and hasnt had a problem yet.

If it had a power sunroof and Navi, I'd consider it over a G35C.

I don't NEED it but I'd like it. I owned 2 Explorers before the CL-S.

From a performance standpoint though I didn't realize 350 horsepower was accessible at such a low price.

For example:

This one

and

this one

I do like the Pathfinder and if I got an SUV I would end up saving money in the long run because I wouldn't modify it but for $18,000 for a 2004 GTO with <20k miles seems like a damn good deal.

I don't recall hearing any problems with the 2004 GTO. Just a lot of whining about the design.

I think a few owners may have reported some paint problems with the '04 but other than that they are solid. $19K may be bit much considering that new '04s were only $21.5 -23K a year ago. For ~ $17K though I don't think it can be beat. Besides, you wont have to pay the gas-guzzler tax if you buy it used.

The list of TSBs on the 2004 is quite extensive although no real major problems just quirky issues.

From what I remember, the CL-S had a pretty extensive list too.

If you can get a good deal; I say go w/ it.

But that doesn't help justify the GTO's list. I'm trying to avoid "CL-S like" problems (rattles, poor brakes, etc).

It's a very good car. I'd prefer the 05 model, but for the $$, you can't beat a 04. It's a well made car that should last

And at least $5,000 more on the used car market.

Of course I'd rather have the '05+ but the '04 is such a great deal hard to justify the extra money for the new motor.

Good cars, I've seen used 05's for low 20's though, not only is the motor different, but the 04's had shit brakes and the suspension was also tightened up for the 05's, along w/ the LS2. Guys are dynoing around 340-350+ w/ the LS2's while the LS1's are under 300 for the most part.

Steve, I love this car, that said it's been to the dealer once for a broken reverse brake light mechanism and in that experience the dealer scratched the dash. I raised hell, they gave me a free oil change, and underfilled the car even after I told them they had, they said the car only required 5.5 quarts while it reguires 6.4. That said, i'll never go back to that dealer, and have found another that is excellent.

I can't get over how much I love this car, it's got more then enough power, the handling can use some work, but I already have some bushings on order, and have also already ordered a Short Shift kit. I'll do sway bars next. I won't be considering motor work for some time.

There isn't much out there that can tough the bang for the buck these days. The NA power is great, cruise around town in 5th and still has plenty of power to move around, unlike a few of the turbo cars I had test driven.

Actually, I grew up w/ the Chang's, Wong's, Lee's, and Wang's. Hence the shit brown wheels on the old CL

Now that I live in white dominated Orange County I figured the GTO was the only way I could blend in w/o driving a truck w/ a 13" pre-runner lift

Had my first mullet wave yesterday, some dude in a vert Trans Am w/ a mullet and a Rusty Wallace sticker kept drooling on the GTO

What were the '04s selling for on average brand new?

I can't even find an '05 6MT for sale within 50 miles of me.

Nothing a Procharger won't fix. And I think I'd still be happy with ~290whp for quite some time.

AD just picked up an 05 w/6k for 19.

According to March's R&T

0-60 in 5.1, 1/4 mile in 13.7. Not GTO numbers but not bad either. and practical. although the exterior styling could be better.

Woah... he only paid 19k?

I thought they were more along the lines of $22k+

Of I could get the LGT with a 5MT for less than $20k I'd say fuck the GTO.

Where are you guys getting this 19k?? It happened with the last thread too...

Nah - it was $22k with 18k miles on it. That's one of the reasons I got the 100k warranty.
