Ahhhh.

$2K....What all do you need to have done? I have 98K on my 04 I35. The only thing it seems to need right now is an oil change and getting the tires balanced. I also have a bent wheel to get fixed. I pulled the front spark plugs and they look brand new.

The I30 also has just over 98k...

Brakes - Front rotors, pads all around (rotors seem to be warping, vibes during hard braking): $600-$800
Current tires have about 60K on them (See:BALD!): $800
100k water pump replacement: $250 (no timing belt replacement, since it actually uses a timing chain which does not require replacement...BRILLIANT!)
ABS rear wheel sensor error: $150

Get those things replaced and it's set to run another problem free 100k...but we're in the mood for something new...

Did you test drive it yet? I'd take a GS430 anyday of the week over the ES.

look for a used 06 GS. There are plenty in your price range out there.
However, some would argue that the 06+ G35 is still a better buy.
Forget about 05 and earlier G35's

And you're not old enough for a ES...yet...

Beware... the '06 GS lost the "recommended" rating from Consumer Reports due to a lot of fit-and-finish problems, and the '07 ES had a serious transmission flare problem.

Edit: Looks like the GS kept the "recommended" tag after all, but still had issues in '06:

In 2007, Consumer Reports dropped Lexus from 1st to 5th in their predicted reliability survey. The magazine blamed the 2006 first-year GS, which had problems in integrity, body hardware and sound system, as the sole reason for the slip. [1] Despite the reliability issues among 2006 GS models, the vehicle earned an "Recommend" rating from Consumer Reports for vehicle features and overall value for that year.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lexus_GS

You should read up on Club Lexus about the ES tranny problems, though.

Hey Whiskers

What about a used Caddy SRX..?? Not too big, not too small. I was offered one last week( brother in law came across one at dealer auction) for pretty much free- 06 with low miles, completely loaded, under $20K and apparently a great vehicle

I thought the SRX were notorious for having problems.

That might explain the low resale value, but I've been reading up with them, and aside from a few whiners, most people are pretty happy with the truck

JD power gives it a 4 out of 5 stars on overall mechanical - maybe its just a reputation issue?

Right you are! It was the AWD model... funny how that info is missing from the wikipedia page. Thank you for making me feel like I haven't totally lost it.

http://thepassionatepursuit.com/2007...below-average/

The news today is that the AWD versions of the Lexus GS, along with two Toyotas, have been dropped from Consumer Reports' 2007 Recommended list. The net result, Toyota as a whole (including Lexus and Scion) has dropped from first overall to third, behind Honda and Subaru.

What were the problems with the AWD GS, which now ranks Below-Average? Consumer Reports asserts that the drop is due to the "accessories and audio system in the all-wheel-drive Lexus GS sedan", which makes very little sense, as the AWD and RWD both share the same components. For some background, the prevailing complaint among Club Lexus GS owners is of creaks and rattles, as well as overall interior material quality, but nothing to add any weight to CR's reasoning.

What I found startling is that Consumer Reports was essentially giving all Toyota models a free-pass to their Recommended list until now:

Still, because of these findings, CR will no longer recommend any new or redesigned Toyota-built models without reliability data on a specific design. Previously, new and redesigned Toyota models were recommended because of the automaker's excellent track record, even if CR didn't have sufficient reliability data on the new model. If Toyota returns to its previous record of outstanding overall reliability, CR may resume this practice. Typically, CR will only recommend a vehicle if the magazine has at least one year of reliability data for that specific model.
Seems like a bad practice to me, recommending any car on reputation alone, and I'm glad to see them discontinue this behavior.

get a TL .. i love mine.. LOVE IT .. if you are a honda head like me.. the TL is the perfect car for those "growing out" of the civic and integra scene.. this is my case anyways..

This is also my experience.. I switched to VW for awhile and realized that i hated fixing them because they always broke down.. So now I am in the TL..

my girl has an 01 GS... very NICE... just feels like a hog on the road compared to my TL.. but inside is larger and car just looks more luxurious.. TL looks sportier..

I also have had a nissan 240.. HATED IT.. made me never want to go to nissan again.. (even though the g35s almost made me change my mind)

I also am never going to buy an american car because my girl previously had a malibu.. worst piece of crap ever.. when it hit 60k we had to change all kinds of stuff.. traded it in for a Toyota solora.. So my girl loves toyota/lexus and i love honda/acura ...

these are the only 2 car manufacturers i will ever trust again..

Why a GS430? Get a GS350.... similar power output, doubt you'll really put to use that extra torque of the V8 anyway
