...I scheduled an appoinment for tomorrow.....
....but the service was quoted for $1,000....
...and that didn't include the brakes that needed to be service so....
....I decided to buy a new car on a whim.
Ended up with a White 2010 Genesis Coupe 3.8 Track Edition. Pics to follow soon.
Finance Terms:
$4,000 down payment
$540/mo 64mos.
It was a demo model though with 4,000mi.

Really? what were you expecting? $200 payment, just because it's hyundai?
I seen people huge upside down and bought a $15000 civic making $600 payment before.
If he really bought the car without any upside down then it is pretty rough payment, but without knowing any information from op, it is hard to say.

Hyundai, maybe. A demo Gen Coupe? No. Sounds like a little bit of negative equity. It happens. I don't pay that much for my G or my BMW.
Very nice car though. Congrats on the purchase I'm sure you have a lot of driving pleasure ahead of you!

Also the bank required us to have gap insurance through a private insurer, which covers the full loan amount in the event the car gets totalled. That was an additional $500.
All in all, I think the per month cost is reasonable, we're financing a 32K car (if you included neg. equity into the car sale price) for $540 a mo. I know people who are paying $450 a month for a $24K car, without any neg. equity. So for us to be paying $90 more a month than that for a car which is quite a bit more expensive isn't to outrageous.

Black with a 2.0T motor and DSG transmission.
This Genesis gets a few MPG worse, about 3~4 overall not to sure I haven't driven to conservatively yet, but it has much more pull.

Plus, I was looking at a used car once and I was quoted $500 a mo/ for a used G35, the asking price was $20K and I was going to pay that much,I had a trade in with neg. equity as well. To be honest, I was using that figure as a comparision.
We also need to factor into account three very important things:
1) The Jetta required 40K mi service ($1000 service)
2) The Jetta would require new brakes within a couple months ($600 est.)
3) The Jetta had the front grill painted black which we would need to replace with an OEM one at lease end ($250)
That's about a $2000 value. Now assuming the negative equity was 4K, we're looking at a $2K premium to jump out of the Jetta and into the Genesis 8 mos. early. Was it worth it, rational thought would suggest probably not, but the got to have it now factor suggests yes and at least I'm happy.

But what are the circumstances involved with your car, down payment interest rate, finance term, sale price? Everything is a factor and unfortunately I had the folly of dealing with negative equity.

It sounds like you knew the circumstances going in and did the best you could to get in a better vehicle. Congratulations again on your purchase.

OP, good job explaining the odd numbers. Certainly, many will not go your route, but you understood the deal and are content. So, congrats and go enjoy your ride.
I just hope that you will keep this ride for a long while - otherwise your wallet is gonna be hurting.

Any *bigger* pics? That one is just a thumbnail.
I thought the deal sounded a little screwy as well at first too, but there's always that moment of sticker shock when you see a $500+ car payment. Hell, if you were financing a new M3 you'd be paying $1000+/mo even at their stupid low 0.9% rate. (just to put things in perspective).
That's seriously the best interest rate they could get you though?
Cool car...Congrats.
