Depreciation????

I was just curious to see how well (or not so well) everyone's primary vehicle has depreciated since the purchase of it. Here is where you can put in your info for your car:

http://www.kbb.com/kbb/UsedCars/default.aspx

...and I thought just to keep everyone's at the same level, we could select 'Private Party Value'. Here is mine.

Make: Acura
Model: TSX
Model Year: 2006
New/Used: Used
Mileage at purchase: 6,900
Price before TTL: 22,900

Current Mileage: ~28,000
Condition selected on KBB: Good
Private Party Value: $20,165

Not even $3,000!

2003 PT Cruiser GT

MSRP: 25,725
Paid: 22,500

70k miles and 5+ years later its worth $10,325

In the hole $12,125

That depreciation is spread over 5 years so technically its only $2425 a year. Maybe a better comparison tool.

UM.....YEAH.....

thats all good and well but just because a vehicle pricing website that is ALWAYS overly optimistic with their numbers tells you its worth $20,165 doesnt mean you have any chance at actually getting a buyer to pay that amount...

incase you havent noticed our country is in a recession, and the brand new TSX is coming out very soon. If you want real world numbers, go to a dealer and ask them what theyd give you on trade in...probably around 14,000. and private party? i think youd have a very hard time getting more than 17,000 in the real world.

I got my TSX for $16,000 before taxes and its value is $15,970, so it's only depreciated $30

Thanks for raining on my parade.

....AND, my parents just recently sold their SUV for what KBB suggested for private party (you're right about dealerships/trade-in's though). So yes, you could get that. I just thought it would be interesting to see what everyones ones.

I think this price would be WAY optimistic however. I would be surprised if I could get more than $25k for it.

I have had a 2004 TSX and now I have an 06.

For the 04 I bought it new and put just over 24,000 miles on it in two years. It was flooded and the insurance gave me $24,250. The BB value at the time was $24,---. My 06 was also bought new and is about a year and a half old ( 19 months to be exact) and it now has 31,000 miles and BB is only at $17,6--

You bought used... the first owner took the depreciation hit for you... Get back to me when you've owned it for longer than a year

03 CLS 6spd purchased new on Oct 4th 2002 at about $400 over invoice - $29.4K or so on a MSRP of about $32K and change...

72K miles and around 5 1/2 years of ownership...

Now worth about 10K in trade (if that) and 12-13K in a private sale...

I'm not going to check KBB again 'cause it depresses me

2004 TL
Purchased Apr 07 for $24,895 after TTL
miles 37K

current mileage 56K
PPV $19K

~$6K depreciation over a year. that's horrible.

Bought it new, priced it as used, maybe I did it wrong but I took the new/used to mean now, not when I bought it.

Not bad on depreciation I guess.... about $700 over 21 months.

Don't really care either. We don't buy our cars as investments, so I really don't sweat the depreciation. If I had to guess I'd say the FJ depreciated about $3k since we owned it, and the Audi maybe $8k. But again, doesn't really matter.

Cars are the worst investment you'll ever make. Live by that rule. It's even worse if you try to sell a modified car. I've kept my 99TL in almost excellent shape for about 8 years now. The car is trouble free and probably keep it for another 3 years. I am actually saving money by doing this

LOL, can't wait to see what it will be worth in another few years and 50k miles later. Maybe $1k?

OK, I'll bite even though KBB is always overly optimistic.

Make: Acura
Model: RL
MY: 2006
New/Used: New
Mileage at purchase: 146
Price before TTL: $42,500

Current mileage: 23,xxx
Condition selected on KBB: Excellent
Private Party Value: $34,335

So that's a loss of $8165 (-19.3%) in 18 months.

My girl is lookin at new Subaru Legacy 2.5gt's. Found a ton of new/used '08s with like only 6-8k on them and they are about 8g's less than if she bought the same car with 0 miles. it's ridiculous how they depreciate that quickly!

My cls6 is actually worth almost 2 g's more than i paid for it last october.

I think Edmund's TMV will be closer to the real world numbers compared to the KBB values (from my experience and research anyway)... maybe we should be using that to compare instead..

[SLIGHTEXAGGERATION]If we were using Galves, most of the cars posted here might have little or no value. [/SLIGHTEXAGGERATION]

well not on what I lost on a FJ or Audi, while I'm not going to buy a car I know will depreciate like a tank, I'm not going to even waste time thinking about the short term losses of owning a vehicle. I like cars and know it is going to cost me more to keep me happy then someone else, you can't put a price on your happiness. Not to mention until you're ready to sell it doesn't matter, buy the car right, don't abuse it and you've got nothing to worry about; unless, of course, you can't afford the car to begin with, at which point it doesn't matter anyways.
