Defroster = A/C

Hi all,

I've been driving my 2005 Accord EX sedan since December. I found out the other day that turning on the front window defroster also turns on the air conditioner, regardless of whether or not the A/C button is actually on. It is easy to test, sit in the car, put the air on vents, then turn on the A/C, listen for the A/C to start and then turn it off. Then press the defroster button for the front window and listen. In my car I can hear the A/C turn back on.

Any one else notice this? Is this a trick to get people to run their A/C in the winter time like they are supposed to?

Air conditioning de-humidifies the air, thus it helps speed up the defrosting process, regardless of what the temp is.

not a trick for the winter, but people should turn on the ac in the winter anyways to get the fluids moving

Normal. Almost every car does this.

People always associate A/C with cold air only. When, in fact, A/C just stands for air conditioner. It conditions the air.

This is the main reason why it turns on. I drive around fog free in the winter, whereas my friends without this feature have fogged windows.

I had an '88 Accord LX that did this... seems to be standard for almost any car with A/C.
