Decisions, decisions

My 2004 TSX has been a lot of fun but I’m beginning to have too many issues with it. I’ve gone through every problem other ’04 drivers have been experiencing plus it just got a new power steering pump and water pump. This week I found out that it needs new ball joints. It also has brand new Nokian tires that I’d really like to keep!

I wasn’t planning to buy a new car because I really like the one I have. It’s paid off, gets good mileage and gets me places. However, I worry that it’s becoming a money pit. I’m beginning to wonder if I should consider trading it in and getting something with warranty.

I’ve done some research and the cars that interest me the most are 2010 TSX, Mazda 6 or 3, and Volkswagen CC. Any other suggestions? I’d like to stay below $30K.

The CC really caught my eye. Does anyone know anything about this car? How is VW’s reliability? Maintenance costs? Resell value?

Thanks for your input!

i'd say VW reliability is acceptable nowaday. not quite par with Acura yet but close. the 2.0 TSI is an excellent engine and fixed many of the earlier problems of the FSI engine. easily chipped for more power. first 3 years/30k you get free maintanence. dont know about resale value. check out the vwvortex cc forum.

Subaru Legacy GT?

And the CC is beautiful, but the V6 is quite expensive. The 2.0L turbo is the one that is somewhat reasonable. Don't know too much about them, though.

I'd keep the TSX since it's paid off.

It's no fun to have a money pit though. Been there, done that and it sucks.

I have heard only good things about CC. I am on vortex alot too. But I would go with the V6 one. But 2.0T is good too, except it's FWD

The CC has a great exterior, but for me the interior of the TSX 2010 is far better.

Slighty preowned G37 would be my choice.

I think the Suzuki Kizashi looks interesting. Here's a video with it and other cars doing an emergency lane change maneuver: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eF0oaAFCiUM

I also saw that BMW is even offering free maintenance on CPOs, along with the warranty (6 years/100K miles from the original sale date). That's tempting. You have to finance through BMW FS, however.

I'd just figure what you'd pay in new car payments a year. Even if you were paying $400 per month (low figure), do you think you'd be dumping $4800 a year into the TSX? 57,000 miles isn't all that much.

Keep it for a little longer. If it continues to give you more problems within the coming months, I'd dump it. But I think you just got some bad timing.

I think I'm going to keep it. It's going to the shop next week then I'm going to give it a good wash and wax and it'll be looking like new.

I went through the same thing with my TSX this year - problem after problem and now the A/C is jacked up again, just a few months after I got it fixed.

I probably would have kept it a couple years longer despite the problems, but we just bought a house and need an SUV anyway, so I'm trading mine in next week. I have a tick under 70k now.

I read the OP's post and it seems a good time to at least narrow down a replacement. The car has ultra low mileage, yet is becoming a money pit without warranty. No fun at all.

Check out the 09 TSX. You may find some great deals. Also, you should get a decent trade-in on yours.

I'm glad to hear that you are going to keep it. If you are starting to get bored with it, get the A-Spec kit or something. Add a few things to really make it your own and maybe you'll fall in love again. Plus a few mods are most likely cheaper than car payments

I agree with this. Despite the low mileage, it's having a lot of problems. Better to trade it in as it sounds like you, like me, have low tolerance for problems with your daily transport. I don't think this is merely new car lust, which Crazy Acura and I both know something about

Sounds like you need a good trusted mechanic more than a car note. Ask around among Honda/Acura owners and see what you can come up with. It is usually cheaper in the long run to fix it and keep it. I've had trouble with new as well as old cars.

Glad you are inclined to keep it. Spend a few dollars and hopefully you will be happy and satisfied again.

Personally, I'd have the car checked out to try to determine if there will be any other issues. I realize you've had to do some work to it, perhaps even more when compared to others of the same year and type, but some part replacement and repair can be considered regular maintenance. I've had vehicles where I thought the repair costs were a little high, but after a few repairs the car became relatively trouble free. I'd be inclined to see what it needs, and if reasonable have them performed and expect to keep the car.

The TSX is a great vehicle and yours is still relatively new. I'm sure it's still presentable and it seems as if you enjoy it. A new car is nice, but the feeling of having a good car and not a payment on a newer, rapidly depreciating vehicle can be just as good.

Terry

I have a good mechanic. I'm just tired of having all these problems.

I really like my TSX and I hope this is the last time it's in the shop. I'm going to keep it, at least for now, but I will be on the lookout for end-of-year deals. 2010 or 2011 TSX is definitely a possibility.
