CTS-V Challenge

Did a search and didn't see this any where else. Is anyone following this nonsense?

http://cadillac.gmblogs.com/2009/10/...liminary-list/

Not sure what the news journalists are going to race in I think a Jag XFR or something but the private owner contestants are going to go up in couple of BMW Ms, a RS4 and another CTV-V? wtf. The RS4 definitely will get owned and we already know the CTS-V is faster than both M5 and M3. I know this is a marketing gimmick but at least attempt to make it a bit more interesting? No AMG owner showed up? Too bad the RS6 is not sold here. I want to see someone go up with the RS6’s twin turbo V-10. That’ll be something to watch.

Someone should import a RS6 over for this challenge.

The details have yet to be worked out, but Lutz already told us and the assembled reporters "You're running into a trap because if you beat me by a second on the lap time, we'll just advertise the price difference."
...tosses that challenge out the window... 'cause NOTHING comes close to the CTS-V for the money.

I'd make a good argument with the Nissan GT-R But that is beside the point...I don't even know how GM managed to make the CTS-V so cheap...

I was a little disappointed with the choices outside of the M5. An M3? WTF? A CTS-V? That'd be a great race, but the point was to test the car competition.

I would have chosen
XF-R
M5
E63
Panamera

and been done with it. In any case, Maximum Bob is going to kick some tail on the 29th, that's for sure.

XF-R Backd out. Jag seems to think the brakes can't handle the 5 laps.

I love the Jalopnik picture and article.

Jaguar Pusses Out Of Jalopnik Vs. GM Race--click

BMW reportedly pulled out as well because the M5 has gotten pasted so badly in the automotive press when compared with the CTS-V, so only private owners with BMWs are on the list.

Chickens and losers. Of course, Maximum Bob is going to have a field day with this stuff. Can you see the ads?

Maybe Acura should hire some folks with similar balls in their marketing department.

EDIT: Here's Bob Lutz's response: click here for Jalopnik.

I think it means that the European high-performance sedans are excellent, even superb cars, but quite possibly not ready for racing laps right out of the show-room. The CTS-V is not only quicker, but will, in totally untweaked, stock form, run hot laps at any race track until it runs out of fuel. Transmission oil and diff oil temps are stable, engine oil temp doesn't go up, brakes get a bit more pedal travel, but don't fade. The street tires get a tad greasy, but handling and control remain excellent. "May the best car win"! (It wins automatically if the competitors won't show up!)

Good challenge on GM's part.

It's been posted on every car forum I visit and the conclusion is unanimous; The CTS-V cannot be beaten for the money.

Great way to get the message across to enthusiasts.

Funny response from the Jag PR guy:

Ray, nice juvenile, but clever, use of the feline wordplay, but one correction on your missive. I said I was concerned that five hot laps without added brake cooling system could compromise the stopping power and thus create a safety concern for your driver. The car can handle it.

The CTS-V is probably the fastest car of the class on the track, whether its the best car of its class is a different matter. I wonder if your readers think the fastest on track car is the best car?

Good luck at Monticello.
Now the benchmark has been set, at least for speed on the track according to the PR guy. Guess we’re going to have wait until the next gen M5 or something to challenge the CTS-V.

A 21 yo kid in an M3 got within 4 seconds of the pros in the V. I wish they would have put one of the pros in the M3 and the 21 yo in the V.

WTF.

Thought they were only going to bring out the professional drivers ONLY if the other car owners were pro drivers as well.

30sec difference in the same car on the same track that can be done in 2min 46sec. Wow the wall between pros and amateurs is pretty thick.

I wouldn't call journalists (Baruth, Ulrich) or Lutz pros. The fastest time was done after the competition was over by Johnny O'Connell - 2:45.

Although the next gen M5 is supposed to have a 540hp 4.4L V8TT, it's also going to be nearly as large as the 7 series......which doesn't bode well for its probability of beating the V at anything.

At least 540hp. The engine is 550 in the x5x6m. I'm thinking that they're coming with like 570. I don't think BMW is gonna get caught sleeping on the new M5.

In it's current trim the CTS-V is sitting at a measly 7 or 8 on the volume dial. Hennessy has shown us all what 11 looks like, Cadillac has lots of room after BMW drops whatever monster they want into the M5 to turn up the volume with little mods.

Super Sedan HP battle.

Burger tuning will be workin' hard too I'm sure. Too bad the M5 will be $100k.

I agree. I think thats why caddy left it a little conservative on the dial. They were waiting for the new M

Caddy knows full well that the E60 version of the M5 is nearing the end of its lifecycle so, I'm certain there was a moderate amount of wiggle room (in terms of performance) when it came to the current V in consideration of what the next M5 (or E AMG or RS6) would bring to the table.

Absolutely correct. With just a tune folks are putting another 30-40 whp to the ground. Even though my official stance is "I'm chicken of putting a tune on", I'm still thinking of doing it. My car already puts 471 whp down with an axleback exhaust. I should be able to easily get over 500 with a tune.

As far as vids....one of the contestants is a member of the Caddy V forum. He has pics coming but hasn't said anything about vids yet. Haven't been to the V site in 36 hours so that might have changed.

I love this: HP wars And these cars get over 20 MPG (when not run flat out). I think we may see the day where these cars are on the 700 HP range (and all over $100K)...

keep in mind the Zr-1 is putting down another 100hp on the same block and AfAIK internals too. probably a different cam, but that's an easy swap. I'd really like to see this platform pushed to failure. I wouldn't be surprised if it hit close to 800 hp with a cam, pulley, tune, exhaust/intake. on pump gas no less.

http://carscoop.blogspot.com/2009/10...lac-cts-v.html

The XF was brought out by a private owner not Jag. corporate.

That "nobody" named Michael Cooper noted on a Bimmer forum that he probably would have been faster in the CTS-V after driving it for a few laps (not hot laps though) if it matters.

It continues to impress me more and more.
