I never tailgate. Not worth hitting the guy in front of me and I'm never in that much of a rush.

As for being tailgated, I drive a truck, so they can get as close as they want. If they hit me it's their fault. I generally do not brake check though since it is illegal as stogie mentioned.

But the people who tailgate usually are in little cars, so if they hit me... they're going to really fuck up their car and possibly hurt myself while doing little (if any) damage to me... so I really don't care.

LOL, age, 19. Born in 1990.

That song, from 1991... from one of the top rap albums of the year if not the early part of the decade before landscape of rap changed.

No way you can even comment about 80's and early 90's rap

I too hate tailgaters....I'm sure most of us who hate people that do it to us at some point are guilty of doing it themselves. I don't like to tailgate, but have done it under certain circumstances...Usually when driving at highway speeds, the faster i'm going, the more distance I keep between me and the car in front of me.

The thing that gets me so frustrated is when you're in the left lane and in a clump of traffic, you want to move just as much as the car in front or behind you, yet the person behind you is sooooo close to you because he wants to keep moving more than you. At times like this i'm usually following much closer than I want to be, but you can't help it sometimes. Regardless, if I ever had to ride closely, it was never less than 1-2 car lengths behind the car in front of me. When someone is soo close that all I can see is their face and not their car in my rear view mirror, I usually let off the gas and slowly slow down, or I would tap the brake pedal just enough to turn on the lights but not enough to actually slow me down. That usually gets them off my ass for a few seconds until they are right back on it again...

The most civil way to deal with it is to get out of the left lane if you are not passing. If they are tailgating you in the right lane or single lane and you are going speed limit just give them the old brake check

If its a single lane road and its a no passing zone and it's not clear ahead, and not to the side to let the person pass, I leave the tailgater alone.

If its clear on both sides and they can pass and don't I toy around with them. I'll usually give the brakes as a warning, if persistant one more time. If they don't stop I usually punch it until I'm a good distance a way, then start going around 25 with the hazards on (done this only once to some asshat who didn't want to pass on a 3 mile stretech of clean road, and I was doing already 60 in a 50...

Otherwise if it's a two lane road, I move over and let them pass. Why get yourself harmed to cool down another driver.

I either move over and just ignore them.

I rather pay attention to the road in front of me instead of my rearview mirror.

ok situation today.
*you're following an SUV next to a truck, suv only going 5 over the limit*
*you pass the truck by over 3-4 car lengths now and the suv doesnt plan on moving over to the right lane and there is another car in the right lane about 5 cars ahead*
what to do? flash the suv with high beams or just pass him?

i thought it'd be rude to flash him so i passed him on the right lane and he flashed me for doing so
but karma is a bitch because the car behind me also passed him in the right lane.

People in central pa sometimes don't have the concept of getting back over into the right lane. There are a lot of maryland drivers that will hang in the left lane and never get over. If someone is going real slow in the left lane and i eventually get past them, i will use the left side tires and ride in the marbles(stuff from the snow plow) and spray their car. It typically makes them slow down real quick or pull into the right lane.

This usually only works when driving on highways with center concrete dividers. The dirt lays right on the other side of the line close to the barrrier.

the answer to your question is, if it is safe to pass, pass

All he had to do was pass me and be done with it (I was going about 55-70 mph on some small roads and that wasn't fast enough for him). This was the only truly stupid German driver I ran into during my 10 1/2 years there. There was always an idiot driver there, but not like this.

I think the issue in the US can be solved through higher education/fees. Germans are required to go to driving school, drive during all weather conditions, use a manual, and drive in the city/autobahn/country. Basically, all conditions. Then the cost is ~$1500 for the license. Acts of stupidity (reckless endangerment, tailgating, etc) can get your license taken away. To get it back? Another $1500 and school........

I think that would be a deterrent for anyone, as opposed to the US system of $20 and a simple written/drivers test.

Cliffs:
German guy tailgated me, Only really stupid German driver in 10 1/2 years there.
The US should be like Germany and raise license fees to ~$1500 and have severe penalties for bad driving.

I'm careful not to follow obnoxiously close to anyone, and usually I'm the one driving a little faster than everyone else on the freeway if I can, so it's not usally an issue for me.

on a highway if I'm being tailgated in the left lane it means I'm not going fast enough. In that case, I get out of the way. If i'm tailgating someone in the left lane, it means they are not going fast enough and they should get out of the way. Otherwise, in any other lane or on any other type of road tailgating is stupid but unfortunately not at all controllable.

I wish I could of saw that. Thats awesome.

But whenever someone is tailgating me, I call a friend and if hes working he comes and saves the day and writes tickets

only time i did this was when a lexus was driving in the middle lane going about 55 probably (ill give him benefit of doubt and say he was going min speed limit). I'm coming up about 70-75 and decide to pass him on the right because no one was in sight.

people don't check their rearview much because this guy then turns in front of me like he did it on purpose or something...i had to hit the brakes and get to like 45-50 now and i went back in middle after checking my rearview...

...laying on the horn and middle finger for all to see...

but admittingly now, it was a stupid move on both of our parts!! but coulda been avoided if this guy drove pace or checked to see me coming up fast. lol.

If you're being tailgated then just slow down to a speed where the separation is safe. I'd judge 1 car length to be safe around 10mph

See thats the problem with speeding. It would be nice if everyone around you was paying attention to the velocity of the car in their rearview mirror. Unfortunately ALOT of people, *cough cough women cough* do not. It happens to me every now and then but thank GOD I always make sure my brakes work

For the record this doesnt only happen when your speeding. One day I was cruising in the left lane of a three lane highway doing the speed limit (50) when some lady jumped right in front of me doing probably about 25mph. She wasn't too far from me and she signaled at the last second as she was coming over forcing me to slam on my brakes of course. The other two lanes were empty and there was no exit on the left. Its times like that where I get frustrated and lay on the horn.

If I'm in the passing lane on a highway and someoen wants to go faster I'll move out of the way, but if I'm not in the passing lane and they still tailgate I get pissed off. If it's winter you can move over to the right a little where all the sludge is so your tires kick up sludge at him, that usually gets them to back off. Other than that you can use your windshield washer to spray him. But don't do that if you're not at least somewhat prepared to defend yourself, I'm 6'4 and train martial arts so I'm reasonably confident I could take on the average person, but there are crazy people who will pull out a gun and in the heat of the moment kill you and only think about their actions later...

when i get tailgated, i like tapping my brakes a lot. i also recently bought a baby on board sign to put on my car to try to help stop tailgaters.

when im at a stop sign, and there's someone right on my ass, i put the car into reverse so my reverse lights shine on em

I rarely get tailgated, but when it does occur, I move over...even if I have to slow down to slot between two cars, I move over to let them by. Besides being the law, it's common courtesy. And better them to flush out the cops than me .

Now, what typically occurs is that I am tailgaiting someone else. They need to move over! I don't care how fast you are going, if someone else is going faster, get out of their way. "Slower traffic keep right"...if you're going 70 in a 55 and someone else is going 80, you are slower...move over.

I don't care how fast you are going-if I am going faster than you in the left lane (and there is not that much traffic), move the hell over. The only thing worse than a tailgater is the cop wannabes. If you don't move over, then it elevates the entire situation.

first thing: i do is take my brakes a couple time to let them know "back off"
if "tail gating" contines:if traffic is light to medium i just pull over let them go by. cause their gonna cause a crash and let it be someone else.

sidenote: Left lane bandits do piss me off. when the speed limit 65 and they run 50 or 55 out in the fast lane. I just wanna shoot the fuckers. i'm like drop in behind the fucking semi.
