Civil solutions for tailgating
Civil solutions for tailgating
I don't like tailgating at all. It is dangerous, immature, and a product of aggravation rather than logic. People do not know if you have a little kid in the car when they do it. People don't know if you have injuries that would accentuate the severity of an accident when they're doing it. They don't know if you have something very valuable in the trunk. Its completely ignorant, and I take it as a total insult.
My problem is that I figured people would have enough sense to at least abstain when there is a 2-inch think piece of ice covering the ground. I mean, what do these people think all that white stuff on the road is... styrophome?
</rant>
Okay being civil, how can we attempt to solve tailgating? How can we account for a decrease in the observed behavior... CIVIL solutions, not shooting them or something. I'm talking hypothetically. The problem will persist forever, but maybe there could be some level of change someday.
1) Of course filing complaints with the police might cause them to crack down if there are enough complaints. Filing a complaint might actually save a life one day.
2) Petition or try to propose a bill or something to make the sanctions more severe in your city. But many people acting based entirely on aggravation rather than logic would not change their behaviors because of harsher laws. Isn't it crazy that our society's law system is based entirely on the lowest level of moral reasoning? But harsher laws might cause SOME people to stop doing it.
3) I was thinking that in the future, cars can be made with sensor in the fronts that can allow the car to sense when you're too close to somebody based on your speed. What should the sensors evoke? I don't know.... maybe an irritating dash board beep like our seat belt reminders... haha. That might add fuel to the road-rage fire though.
4) Rear fog lights: this is bad though. This could be blinding even to non-tailgaters. This could piss the tailgaters off and evoke other similarly aggressive behaviors. This could get you a ticket. This could cause you to do a mod that you don't really want. So rear fogs are not a civil solution at all.
#1 is the best I think. If the cops actually cracked down hard on tailgating, it might noticeably decrease. All we can do is file a complaint.
What can you guys think of...?

i think...
this should be in car talk.
that being said... i dont have a problem with tailgaters... i just move out of their way. problem solved.
#3 would be a problem in Los Angeles with all the traffic congestion we have.

exactly... I move too.
But, then the next guy gets on your tail. You can't move for every driver. Also, sometimes stopping like that could cause more danger. This is a problem at rush hour. When traffic congestion recedes, moving out of the way is an excellent solution.

There are some rare occasions where I get tailed although there is plenty of room to overtake OR another lane to safely pass. If your in a rush and Im not then of course I'll be more then willing to let you pass, Doesnt bother me BUT If Im in the right lane and there is open lane to my left then I start to get a little irritated. Thats why I slow down to 5mph and put my hazards on...
Last tailgating experence I had, i was driving down 205 and this older (mabey 45-50 Y/O) guy in a lincon was riding my ass real bad. I tapped my brakes and the fucker rammed me, long story short we had it out on the side of the freeway and the guy ended up getting aressed over it, he rammed me and threw the first punch. Best part about it was when I heard the cop ask him if he really thought he could take me, lol.
I just take my foot off the accelerator and piss them off even more. I usually drive about 5-10 over the speed limit. To me that's plenty fast. If someone needs to go faster than that then they better find a better route than on my bumper. People are too impatient. They should leave 10 minutes earlier if they have a problem.
It won't go away no matter how fast or slow or what lane you're in. Or on your neighborhood, secondary road, major route or highway, hell even a shopping center parking lot. Even in the drive thru at McDonalds,
Always suggestions, never solutions.

I thought there was a FL hotline for reporting aggressive driving.

sometimes with medium traffic you cannot get out of their way as everyone is kinda boxed in, etc. i drive 52 miles round trip daily on the I94 to school and back...my point is I've seen plenty of all situations anyone would bring up on the highway...
what i do with tailgators is either (first) get out of their way, but as i just stated above, sometime you can't do that. the (second) option i do is hit the brakes HARD for about a quarter of a second or shorter (any more and they'll hit you). all you want to do is get your car to jerk back like a foot suddenly and they get the idea. after that, they ALL back off or look for the next opening out of my lane!!
(actually tuesday, i had a BMW M5 tailgating me and i did this, jerked my car back for split second, but there was no where for him to go. he backed up just a little so he was actually still tailgating by the books...anyway when there was finally an opening from the slow car blocking us, i didn't take it first because i knew this guy would take it right behind, solving nothing.
this guy FLOORED the SHIT out his M5...i can't even describe how fast that car is from 60-100+ OMG!!!! my heart started pumping hearing that thing roar and disappear ahead!!
sometimes pissing off a nice car pays off! wish i got it on camera as i usually do...i should post some of the stuff i've seen on the highway!!)

I hate people that drive slow in the left lane, but I'm with phipark, if I'm goint 5-10 over in ANY lane, and you tailgate me, YOU are the asshole.
I just coast down. I want to get a plate frame that reads "The closer you get, the slower I drive"
For the record: If there is no traffic congestion, I'm not in the left lane.

I had someone tailgate me one night. It was around 10:30 PM and were only a few cars. It was a 2 lane highway and I was in right lane cruising around 68-70 MPH, left lane was empty. There was this SOB started tailgating me. I speed up and tried to get away from him but this a-hole was still right behind me. So I called CHP and got him pulled over for drunk driving.
Umm tailgating is awesome!!! You hangout out with the your buds and some bitches in a parking lot. Play some sports, get drunk eat some brats and some burgers!!! maybe some chicken wings!! That's the best part of the game!! OP is crazy!!

Nice.
I don't know about your states, but in Arizona, just as there are laws about following too closely, there are laws against slamming on your brakes for no reason...
I had someone do it to me in my patrol car years back not realizing I was a cruiser. Boy was he surprised when the lights came on...
