Checked out a 2001 M3 today at lunch....

A buddy at work asked me if I'd like to go check out the new M3 today at lunch. I figured what the heck lets go see this thing in person. This post is not a full eval of the M3, more like the Readers Digest version... Yeah it's fast, handles great and is pretty too. But I just can't get past that $65,000 price tag. Like wtf 65k... The 99 M3 next to it was going for 39k with low miles and was real nice also (they obviously hold their value).
There is no doubt that the new M3 is a serious machine. But when ya get into that price range ya really have a lot of options on nice sports cars. I'd probably go with an S4 and mod it or even a Z06...IMHO

Question for M3 people: The engine looked like it had 6 TB's, one for each cylinder. Is that just on the M3 or all 3series?

Also the wheels looked sweet, the front tires were 225/45/18's and the rears were 255/45/18's Impressive stuff man

I am confused. Do they have the big AMV line item on the car (adjusted Market Value). The C&D that just came out had the car at 50k as the list price. Is it just price gouging right now.

first of, there is no M 7series, only M rims that they can buy and put on.

the list is 50 i believe, but ever dealer is adding at least a 10K markup to it. Why? because they can. Same reason M5's are going for 80K, Z8's are going for 160K, 996 TT's go for about 150-160 and the reason ferrari is now making some of their purchasers sign a contract saying if they want to sell the car they must sell it to ferrari first, or give them the option. Cars prices get markedup like crazy. And personally, i'd take the new M3 over a z06 anyday. The m3's refinement is in the motor, the interior, and the all around package of the car; the vette is nice, true, but isn't the same.

You're a dip. I didn't call it an M7, I said it's a 740i with the M package, which includes the larger/wider rims and performance tires. Duh.

BMW 740i Sport Package

- 18-inch M Parallel Spoke alloy wheels

- Performance tires

- 235/50 ZR-18 front
- 255/45 ZR-18 rear

- Performance rear axle ratio (3.15) and higher stall-speed torque converter

- 5-speed STEPTRONIC three-mode transmission

- M-Technic sport suspension

- Shadowline exterior trim

- 18-way power Contour sport seats with additional side bolstering and power thigh support

- M-sport multi-function steering wheel

- Vavona Redwood interior trim

, so it's got a different steering wheel and different rims ain't nothing special

didn't know it was that much of a difference when you threw in the sport package, and you said m package not sport package dip, but you still can't be comparing the 740i to a m3. The 740 is a dog, and not a sports car like the m3 is even w/ the sports package. My dad used to own one, and that thing was just damn slow. But it was a bitchin ride, wish he would of kept it when the lease went up, i like it alot better then the new S he has. But the S is damn fast for a big ass car.

So, you're saying that the CL-S is slow too? These two cars have almost the exact same 0-60 and 1/4 mile times.

the 740's are in the mid-low 15's so yes i'm saying the CL-S is slow too if your running low 15's. The s500 is a mid 14 second car, it's feels and is alot faster then the 740. I raced my dads 740 when i first got my CL and it barely beat me up to about 70

ya, my dad regrets so much getting the benz, the BMW was such a sweet car, he had 4 7 series a 735, and then an old style 740, and then 2 new style 740's. All in that calypso red

ya, thats where my dad got lucky, they have all been fully paid company cars. He has made it very clear to me though, that if he did have the money to buy them, he most likely wouldn't; he said they just aren't worth it. Esp. the benz

Wow, interesting view points on the 740, especially in comparison to the new S. Your dad REGRETS buying the S instead of the 7? Amazing. Personally, I think the new S runs circles around the BMW. It is A LOT better looking, inside and out. You cant touch that car, in my opinion. Its in a class of its own.

I have had a lot of experience with luxury cars, as my dad has a 2000 S-500, my bro in law has an old S with 19's, my cousin has a 2001 LS430 and my other cousin has a 2000 750, just before the S's came out. He regrets buying that in a major way. I would say test drive the new Benz and then tell me you dont like it better than a BMW.

As for your friend who just bought a 7 with the M package... why on earth did he buy it if its about to be redesigned and the new ones should be coming out within a year? Should have waited if he wasnt going to buy the Benz.

In my opinion, Benz has a HUGE advantage over BMW in the ultra luxury market (the big body sedans). But the BMW has a big edge on Benz in the other cars (3 vs C, 5 vs E, etc.)

Just my 2 cents.

this is what he hasn't liked about the S

-the seats are way uncomfortable compared to the BMW, long trips in the benz take it's toll

-the control panels are more confusing and harder to reach and operate

-the AC isn't the same

-and little things like that

he does like that it's much faster and more powerfull though

My buddy couldn't wait. He had two cars he needed to sell and he wanted a CLK430, but the wait was like 8 months! So, he decided on the 2001 740i. Had he waited on the 2002 model, he would still be waiting plus waiting for another 6 months at least! Too much waiting.

Good point about the waiting. Waiting does suck. I think the 740's are nice cars, I just dont think they are as good as the Benz's. But they are the second best luxury car out there. I couldnt believe my cousin bought a LS430. If he wasnt going to buy a Benz cuz we had one, buy a BMW! What a moron. The LS430 just bites way too much for my taste... it has no personality. I like the 7 series and their 18's though... especially with the orange cleared out in the back.

Just wondering... have you seen a new S with the sport package (18's and bodykit). It looks amazing. A buddy of mine has a silver one. Pretty fat.

Anyway, the M3 is a very nice car, but I wouldnt pay a dime over 50K for it. If it is 60K, thats a joke. For that much money you should be getting a car with more room, simple as that. M5 is a much better car, in my opinion. But even those are due for a redesign soon (the 5 series.)
