Car insurance question
Not sure If this is the right area to post this but whatever I tried. My situation: I'm looking to buy a different car/ trade my Tl in. My car is currently insured under my Mother as her second car since insurance is much cheaper that way. She is under the assumption that if she takes my TL off and replaces it with another car (is350) she will get in trouble with the insurance company. I think is ridiculous. Is this true? Do they investigate these type of things?

yeah. but the insurance company doesnt try to investiage why she had a type-s TL and now a is350. Shes a 50 year old woman so she thinks they will find it odd shes driving 300 hp cars.. lol

I think you and your mom are just bit too concerned. Is it possible that they may ask some questions? Sure. Likely? Not in my experience. That's how I did it when I was young(er). In fact, they never even checked for the 6,000 miles/year limit as my car was registered as a weekend pleasure vehicle for my dad.

I stayed on my parents auto insurance for a few years after I moved out and there was no problem. I even bought a new car (when I bought my TSX) and the insurance agency removed my old car and added the new one without batting an eye. They knew that the car was not garaged at the same address as my parents and they didn't care. If it makes any difference, this was with Mercury Insurance.
So, IMHO, you have nothing to be concerned with.

The insurance company really doesn't care as long as they get their money. It is literally a phone call to transact the switch. You and your mom are overworrying about something that the insurance companies handle on a daily basis.

Unless you find it odd for an older woman to be driving a 300HP Cadillac XTS/DeVille/STS, Lexus LS, Jaguar XJ/XF, BMW 535, Mercedes E350, Aud A6/A7, etc...
It's all too common here in SoCal.
Like neuronbob said, as long as they're getting paid, they couldn't care less.

I'm amazed at the answers. It may be easy, all to common etc. but it's still called fraud. Yes the insurance company will take the money and turn their head up front.
Just curious, any of you get in a bad accident in "the weekend pleasure car"? If insurance investigates and finds the car is a dd by young driver they could deny the claim.
I'm really not passing judgement, I'm just curious and surprised that everyone thinks its ok to cheat.

Had my CL insured by ICBC (BC, Canada) as a to/from work and school on no more than 6 days a week with comp and collision. Took it on a 6k km trip to cali and back for 2 weeks straight, had a hatchet plant on the hood on Hollywood Fwy. Insurance asked more questions about a previous claim than they did about my coverage.

You do know that for a TL Type-S and an IS350 the target demographic is around 40-50. Being on a car forum it skews the demographics a bit as younger males tend to post on message boards.

Are you an authorized driver?
Will the mileage allowance on the car match the amount you drive it?
If you live with your mother, are an authorized driver and don't put excessive miles on the car, then there should not be any problems with the insurance.
If you are not a student but live in a different residence than your mother, the insurer can deny coverage due to misrepresentation if a claim is made on the policy.
If OP lives with mom or lives at college with the intent of returning home, then his car can be secondary on his mom's policy.
Mom and OP are committing fraud if OP lives elsewhere on a permanent basis and the insurer is not advised of the car's garage location (which affects rates independently of the driver)...

This.
I assume that the OP lives with his mom, in which case there is no fraud. If not, then there is trouble.

Oops, sorry I did make some assumptions about living arrangements.
Also, assumed that if young driver has same address, a car must be assigned to him.
I retract my previous comment, not enough information to call it.

I am a full time student and live at a different address, but we live in the same city. And i am an authorized driver under her insurance. I figured it was a bunch of BS because somebody told her they investigate it when you switch cars. Ive had the TL for 2 years it isnt odd if someone gets another car in two years. I know its ridiculous, i just needed some points for the sake of argument. Unfortunately since im a student with only a bartending job on the books, 2 no fault accidents, with a less than perfect driving record, im forced to be on a parents insurance. Im not payin 400/month for it thats insane. but thanks for the replys guys.. really appreciated.
