Is it bad...

to mix real oil with synthetic oil?

My dad took my car on a 550-mile trip last night to pick up some shipment that didn't get shipped to his office that he needs desperately today (don't ask, I have no freaking clue why he didn't send one of his minions ), and he took my car because it has better gas mileage than his truck. He told me this morning that he put a quart of oil in my tank...

Now my dad is pretty much car-zero unless it's good ol' american trucks (and what good ol' american truck DOESN'T like getting an arbitrary quart of oil every now and then... ), and I'm like 99% sure that he didn't get synthetic oil. I have 4-month-old synthetic oil in my car right now, plus this new bottle of "real" oil.

Is this bad? Do I need to change my oil stat?

yank it, you need to change your oil anyways. He tell you what weight or anything it was? Your dad knows the diff between synths and reg so maybe he did right. I'd ask him. It won't hurt his feelings if he screwed up, he'll learn something.

still don't know why he put oil in it though

Why don't you add some olive oil, it's good for the car.

I wouldn't make a habbit of it, but it's not going to harm anything short term.

@ "arbitrary quart of oil"!

If you need an oil change anyway, you might as well change it. People put synthetic blends in their vehicles sometimes, which is sort of the same thing I think. But don't quote me on that. I'm pretty sure that it hasn't caused any damage though.

I would use a synthetic blend if necessary.

He said it was SAE 520. And he put oil in it because he checked it and the dipstick said I was a quart low.

I'd worry more that your engine had too much oil in it, which can be bad.

EDIT: nevermind, just saw your last post.

The pot is addling your brain, dear. Remember, you and Brian had that big pow-wow, deciding it was time for me to make the switch to synthetic, and you gave me a brand and type to buy. Whatever, it doesn't matter. Going to Jiffy Lube tonight.

No, your dad and I talked about going to synthetic. I told him to do it and have whatever his shops use. We didn't talk about weight. You guys use different weights then we use out here

Might wanna clarify with your dad that he put it in the engine, and not the tank.
Its not going to hurt anything, and, no worries since you're going to change the oil soon anyways.
