Autonomous Cars: Discussion Thread
As many of you surely know, Google made headlines with their prototype of a fully autonomous car without steering wheel or pedals. This is a piece I've been wanting to pen for some time and last night, I finally got around to it. Hopefully you enjoy.

I can think of a couple times while sitting in gridlock traffic or being super tired when this would definitely come in handy. Other than that I, like most people on this forum, actually enjoy driving...hence the Acura!

I'm not sure...at times it sounds nice to not have to worry about driving, but then at that point, I could just take the bus. I enjoy the focus and mental stimulation (if that makes sense) that I get from driving and commuting to work and class. Its a stress relief. I get excited to drive every morning.

From: where the weather suits my clothes
I just take a cab. A couple of nights ago, I was out for an evening with friends and had a couple of cocktails and some rather nice red wine. Knowing full well I may have been slightly over the limit, I did something I've never done before ~ I took a cab home. Sure enough, I passed a police road block but, since it was a cab, they waved it past.
I arrived home safely without incident, which was a real surprise as I have never driven a cab before and am not sure where I got it or what to do with it now that it's in my garage.

I'm not so convinced that autonomous cars would be a bad thing. As you said in your piece, most people hate having to drive and treat it as a chore. By removing that factor and having those people essentially removed from the flow of traffic, it should hopefully free up the roads for those of us who enjoy using them.

The concept is very cool, and I definitely see it being implemented in the near future. While I agree that some people actually do enjoy driving, it's easy to see the benefits when you consider elderly drivers and disables patrons who cannot normally drive themselves places. Heck, I'd much rather be on the same road as a computer generated drive than with a half-blind snowbird who can't keep their lane.

I would LOVE it if the timid drivers, the distracted drivers, and the Mexican drivers had these.

Driving behind one of those must be the worst thing in the world.
Im taking a guess here but just because the speed limit is 30/45/60 doesnt mean the car will drive that fast. Imagine being behind that car going 30 in a 45 or being stuck behind it on the highway.

My post from the Waymo thread seems to still hold true. The science just isnt there yet
Has anyone put one of these cars in Minnesota with 2 feet of snow on the ground? Or in a situation where a puddle of water covers half the road? What about potholes? What about streets that havent been updated by Google Maps since 2001. How about roads with construction and cross walk guards and detours?
What happens if the car pulls a Michael Scott and drives into a lake because the GPS told it to?
