It's an article about how easy it is to steal keyless entry cars.

This seems pretty unlikely to ever "catch on" with auto thieves due to the cost and effort involved. This also would only work on passive entry systems, such as the one in the RL, but what is the actual range of that system? Is it really 26 feet?

My car, when parked in my driveway is about 15' from where my coat is usually hung with the key in the pocket. Using the logic of the study, that would mean my key is constantly close enough to allow my car to be unlocked by anyone who happens to try the handle. I can tell you from experience that this is not the case.

Also, following people around a mall in our surveillance society is a great way to get caught on camera and eventually arrested.

slight problem in the logic here.

The cars, such as RL, actually require the key fob to be constantly interacting with the vehicle. If you step outside of the car, it knows about it. So if you managed to get someone's signal to open the car, managed to start it and drive off, the fuel cut off is about 2 miles...and what are you gonna do then?

This, theoretically may work in stealing stuff from inside the car, but I don't think anyone is going to drive away and enjoy it too.

Oh yeah...you have to be within like 2 feet to even start the RL so I wouldn't want to be the guy with a huge antenna screaming and cursing that the car won't start

While it is true that it knows about it, in the case of Acuras, it doesn't care. You can run any smart key Acura without the key in it or near it until one of 2 things happens. You either run out of gas or you shut the car off.

When we are doing snow removal (which has been very frequently lately) we just walk around with a box of smart keys and go up to every ZDX, RL and TL tech, unlock the door and start the car and go on our way. Once everything is running the keys come back inside so they don't get lost.

The cars beep at you when you close the drivers door with the engine running but without the key in the car and alert you on the MID that the key isn't detected but that's just to let you know that if you shut it off, you won't be able to start it without the key.

are you saying you were able to drive those cars for over 2 miles without the key inside?

I know I've gone at least 10 miles without the key.

hm, if that is true, it's definitely something to think about.

and when you say key, I hope you mean key fob cause the key alone does not very much.

Yeah, I mean key fob. If you have an RL, try it sometime.

I would need a 2nd car somewhere near me, I wouldn't want to get stranded if um...your theory isn't correct, ehehe

guess I'll try it the next chance I get, thanks

Acura tells us nothing about the car shutting down after a period of time or distance travelled without the key fob. They only warn that if you close the door with the engine running and get the "keyless remote not detected" warning you will not be able to restart your car if you shut it off.

If it worked the way you think it does, it wouldn't be safe. The battery in the key fob is eventually going to die and when that happens they can't have the car just shut down.

For cars which use a key fob, there is another way to break into the vehicle. I don't know if this works on all such vehicles, but I watched a video where it worked with the test car.

Take a tennis ball and drill a hole in it about 1/2" to 9/16" wide and do not drill all the way through the ball (only make one hole). Now take the ball up to the car and place the hole over the keyslot where a normal key would be used to open the door. Now push the tennis ball quickly and kinda hard to force air into the keyslot. On the test car, this forced the interior lock up and unlocked the driver's door.

I have not tried this on either of my TL's.

i saw this article on yahoo also, but on the RL's, if the remote key is out of battery, the ignition switch won't turn.

It is possible that the battery becomes too weak while you are already driving it (after the switch has been turned and the car has been started), they can't have the car just shut down b/c the car no longer detects the remote.
