do you ever wish that the money you spent on that new car with just getting it ..then the mod's misc stuff..that you would have just purchased a older model that was half the price and spent that other half on having that car turned into what dreams are made of?????

I rather have a new stock 30k car than a used 15k car with 15k worth of mods into it. That just seems like a waste.

No, unless I planned on making the car a project car to begin with. There's a certain satisfaction when you first drive your new car off the dealership lot.

This is what I'm going to do with my next car, although it will be a while. Trying to get 500K miles out of my Accord.

Yeah I agree with spending more to buy a new car instead. However personally I rather buy a better certified pre-owned car with a warranty that is the same as new as apposed to the same price level new car I would be able to afford.

See, if you have the funds for a new car....not knocking the 20 year olds in this thread that said they bought new, but one has to wonder where they acquired $30k...hopefully not from daddy

I could only afford to buy a used $20k vehicle, which happens to be a TL.

I currently have the new TL and went to check one of my boys and he never buys new last car i seen him with was the cherokee srt8 BEAST....so he throws me the keys to his new ride at my shock he now is currently rocking the 08 porsche cayenne gts ...and that car 3 years older still cost more and is worth more than my brand new car ..lol ..But i think i have a nice balance i have a brand new acura ..that's a pretty good buy ..something about being the first owner ...

Well it really depends, I mean would I buy a used 2nd Gen RL and make it into an awesome Luxury ride like an S class, probably not. But would I buy and NSX and dump 30K into making it my dream ride vs. buying something else, of course!

With the exception of my first car, I've always bought new. And while I won't say never, I don't currently plan on doing so ever again.

I have not purchased a new car since 2001 and my wife has only purchased one new car (in 2005). Only reason for that was she never had a new car and she busts her ass... so it was time.

Other then that, CPO for us all day every day. Just picked up a "new" one not too long ago. Saved about $23k off of new and it's basically a new car. No reason to buy brand new. Better to let some other sucker take the depreciation hit and I can put that money saved into assets that appreciate...

As for modding them... my wife's cars are not the type you really mod. And for me, I don't mod so much as update something every once in a while. Nothing like I used to do when I had my 02 TLS. Example... my FJ is an '07 and the only significant thing I have done to it is wheels and tires (added in mid-2009).

All depends on the car. Would i have a hard time buying a used car like a C5/6 vette and sticking 10k into it making it faster and better? No. Would i have a hard time buying a New C6 and then on top of it spending 10k into it probably.

Usually my biggest regret is afterwards wishing i had ponied up the little more for a option they offered from the factory.

^^^I agree with that...
I think it's a vague question because there are many different levels of "used".
I bought out my stepdad's lease on his 2004 Apsec TL (per plan) at $13500 with 34K miles and knowledge of the entire history of the car. Have put about 7 in mods overall over the last 2 years (WTF...was sad the day I added it all up). If you do the math on that, you can't even really get a used KIA for a car I consider a head turner and a great/fun/strong car to drive.

I guess it all depends on what you can afford...the original $40K pricetag on this car in December 2003 was way out of my price range...I bought my RSX new and it was nice to know I was the only guy that farted in it...but once it was mine and it had this and that little scratch or defect...it was just another used car. Once you own the car, even if you're not the first owner, it's yours.

I looked around a lot for new cars when I anticipated a drop in my credit...the $2K lost in taxes/tag transfer etc...was a lot and most of the cars in my price range left me unimpressed...or at least unimpressed enough to NOT sign on the dotted line.

Last big mod I bought was the Jpipe...renewed love for the car after that...justified by only spending 500 when buying a new car would have cost 7 or 8 times that in lost interest and taxes.

But of course, buying a highly modded older car from someone you couldn't confirm took care of it is a total crap shoot and I'd rather have a new car instead of that.

Bought new once, I never will again.

I'd rather let someone else pay for the depreciation. You get the same car. I don't mod so the other part of the question does not apply to me.

i'd rather buy a car that is 1 year old..

depreciation is huge.. and you're getting a car with a long warranty left on it.. and the $5k you saved can go into the car.

so yea, i'd say i'd rather buy a used one, but nothing that is 4-5 years old...

new car prices are rape compared to one year's depreciation...

if i have the funds, i would rather buy new. nothing beats the smell of a brand new new car rolling off the showroom. but 99% of the times, i would buy 1-2 years old cars, preferrably CPO to save big. but if i'm really strapped for cash, i would buy 5-6 years old ones and with 1-2 previous owners only. my current car, the RL, is the oldest car i've bought....6 years old with 1 previous owner.

modifying a car has nothing to do with "rice" btw....

you can heavily modify very expensive, new cars and DD them.

My CL was the only car I ever bought new and I will never do it again. Sticker on that car was 32K and 7 years later with only 50K miles on it I was able to get 8K for it. On the other hand the avalanche I have now listed for 45K new in 2003 and 7 years later I was able to get it for 19K with only 10K miles on it. This situation is not the norm but I never want to eat the deprecation of a new car again.

from my experience

My new TL is my second brand new car..my first was an 07 mitshubishi galant before then never spent more than 6 grand on a car and 2 of my cars my mom gave me way back when..my second TL i bought CPO and by the time they finished adding everything up i could've just added another three grand and got one that nobody else had driven..so when i traded it in ,everywhere wanted to give me 11K for it and it only had 50K miles on it ..So the last place i went Gave me 15K and i jumped on it .But in my journeys i tried to get an 09 TL and same thing by the time i get the final number it's about 3 grand less than a brand new one so i said not again and went for a 2010 brand new at first with about 1500 off the regular sticker but they didn't have a tremendous color selection be it it was in dec of 2010 so i paid the extra 1500 to be able to pick the color i actually wanted..I had big plans for that car (2006 TL)ronjon body kit, ronjon wheels, intake exhaust .and whatever other bells and whistles i couldve applied to that car until it was were i wanted it to be ...But unfortunately it started acting up 1.engine mounts had to be changed twice 2. fuel line issue 3.power steering rack had to be changed 4. squeeky noise coming from car that the dealer could never locate then a god awful sound coming from the car when turned on after sitting for a while ..It only had 50K on it didn't want to see what would happen at 80K ..So now with the new one thus far the windshield had to be replaced because out of nowhere i get a hairline crack ..Some ass stops infront of me and bam. Had to get that fixed ..So i def understand where some are saying CPO is better..Because i thought it was just bad luck with the car and tried to trade it in and they told me 26K unbelievable the kelly blue book on a 2010 with the same mileage was still at worst WORST CASE SCENARIO 29K ...

would I buy the same car used just so I have money to buy mods? absolutely not.

would I buy a NICER car used versus a cheaper car brand new? absolutely.

If it's possible to have a worse investment than a new car, it's probably buy mods to a car. Not that I'm against modding, but I don't think I'd ever settle for a cheaper car just so I'd have "extra" money for mods.

I've never bought used. Not that I don't like used car, it's just that I hate looking for months and still end up with a compromised car. With new, I can pick and choose the exact one I want (color, transmission type, and optional equipment). Also, I know the history of the car since the day I drive it off the dealer's lot. With a used car, even if you get all the service records from the previous owner, there may still be some minor issues that you don't know about.

Off topic, it hurts to read any post from the OP. Please break up your sentences using commas or periods. :troutslap

You know you can do that with used cars also...right? When we bought our A6 we went to our Audi dealer, told them what we wanted, and the dealer located it for us. My wife got exactly the vehicle she wanted. The process was not all that different then buying new... except we saved some serious coin.
