Acura -VS- BMW getting tiresome

BMW guys are talking about our tranny issues:

Why wouldn't they? We take potshots about their service issues all the time. In fact I think some people like to hear when BMW's have issues so it makes them feel better about their buying decisions. Fact is every car has problems. Vette's were blowing engines for a while, S4's were blowing turbos, Shit.. TT's were designed soo poorly they had a recall to add a lip spoiler to stop them from losing control at high speed. The more I watch this place the more I swear there is a TON of penis envy going on between Acura and BMW.

We spend 3X as much time around here bashing BMW than any other brand what does that tell you? Well, that tells me we either really love them or really hate them or alot of people here wanted one, could'nt afford one, bought an Acura, are uncomfortable with their buying decision but think it's ok to just bash the shit out of another car. BMW is winning the ultimate game here with tons of sales while our cars depreciate more and more every day. I guess whatever makes you guys feel better but personally I think it's sad.

I also notice alot of 'affordability' comments around here lately. We all have our own budgets, we all have a different sense as to what is expensive and what is not. To say to someone 'you blew 8K extra on a Beamer' could mean nothing to a person who lives in a 900K house and spends money like it's nothing. What I also think is funny is that everyone, according to some people here, who buys a 325 or 330 is a wanna be or is a brand label shopper. I agree, to a certain extent that there are some people out there who do this, AND I would agree, that's sad. BUT there are alot of people out there too (believe it or not) who bought the car for alot of other reasons.

Let's not forget that if Acura ever put out a 45K+ sports sedan or 'nicer' CL and we still had our regular CL's I guess everyone would be calling us bottom barrell wanna be's too.

j roc kcls (12:20:43 PM): It's not the people in $900k houses that people are talking about when they say "you're wasting $8k on options packages" - they're talking about the average person like possibly you or definitely I to whom $8k is not a sum of money to be thrown around lightly.
And I maintain that a 325, just like a low-end Cclass Benz, is a car someone bought for the badge on the hood/trunk.
I do agree that pissing contests among different brands of cars are childish and pointless. I'm happy with my purchase, and I don't mind someone calling it a Honda (has happened "huhuh nice Honduh" "thanks"), but I'm not going to bash someone in person because of what car they bought, even if it is a 325 or Cheapclass Benz. I will share my general opinions here, though, that's what forums are for. But if you're a BMW owner and you don't like something you read on an Acura forum, well shit, don't read it. Same goes for Acura owners who read BMW boards or Maxima boards and get all upset.

j roc kcls (12:20:51 PM): i mostly agree with ya

forsythconsultng (12:21:41 PM): I guess I just notice what appears to me, a one-sidedness
forsythconsultng (12:21:49 PM): or over bashing of bmw
forsythconsultng (12:21:53 PM): but maybe that's just me

j roc kcls (12:22:13 PM): well their 330 is our direct competitor, only priced a lot higher because of the roundel on the hood/trunk, imho
j roc kcls (12:22:25 PM): and offering a little more performance stock

forsythconsultng (12:22:43 PM): imo, bmw's are better thought out vehicles

j roc kcls (12:23:28 PM): and you're welcome to your opinion :-)

forsythconsultng (12:23:46 PM): and their testing is much more rigourous, not their quality, their testing. Their vehicles were meant for a road with no speed limits therefore they feel good at any speed, unlike acuras that seem to suck above 100 (except nsx)

j roc kcls (12:23:51 PM): my opinion would be that BMW aims more towards a driving enthusiast, while Acura aimed more at comfort first

j roc kcls (12:24:03 PM): why are we discussing this btw?
j roc kcls (12:24:16 PM): i already said i mostly agree with what you said

forsythconsultng (12:24:17 PM): dunno, were not a war with iraq yet?
j roc kcls (12:27:44 PM): heh

forsythconsultng (12:27:54 PM): oh, go cut and past
forsythconsultng (12:27:57 PM): i posted it
j roc kcls (12:28:04 PM): lol

Why do you talk? :P

Anyways... I been to both sides of these cars. I had a TLS for a year and now a 330ci... and acura owners can bash, cry, and say anything they really want about bmws, butfor me.. bmw is my choice, and i can not picture ever going back to acura. Dont get mad, but thats just me. Now maybe some of you dont think BMWs are worth it..thats fine. Thats YOU.

And you guys say people buy it for the logo? Well shit bmw must be doing somthing right if their logo are well respected.. dont ya think?

I love you guys.. but somtimes you dont look past $$ and realize the bmw are quality cars and YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.

Consider my post an observation into the behaviors here. I figured I would get flamed but whatever. Sure, I'll 'deal with it' but im sure as hell gonna call it like I see it.

Oh, and thanks crazy for adding gasoline to the Jet Fuel hehhhhe

uhhh yeah, how bout all u bimmer haters go to E46 Fanatics and notice they don't bash the CL's...y??? they respect us...can't we do the same to them??? what makes us any more gifted than the bimmer??? honestly??? tell me 1 thing an Acura owner has over a bimmer owner that warrants the Acura owner to b better...and if u say $8K in the owner's pocket, i'm gonna kill u

tell ya what...let's flip it around...RSX vs. CLS...now we're the more expensive of the 2...it's an even closer apples to apples comparison when u lay everything out, yet the RSX is less...do u see the RSX'ers coming on ACL and bashing us?? no...do the RSX'ers bash us on their forums?? no...y?? b/c they respect us.

BMW makes a fine vehicle, but I think they are placed by many here on WAY too high a pedestal.
Some people think they are so reliable that you can weld the hood shut and drive them for 100K.

When I bought my Legend Coupe back in 1992 a coworker bought a 325 5-Speed Coupe the week after I got my car.
I rode in his and he rode in mine.
I’m a big guy and the Bimmer was too cramped inside for me.
We worked together for nearly five years after that and he had TONS of issues with his car while all I was doing was oil changes.
His car was in the shop for all sorts of problems time and time again.
When the warranty ran out he had to start PAYING to fix stuff before he finally sold it.
I kept my Legend for 8-Years and 110,000-miles and did nothing but scheduled services.

The M3 is an awesome car and it deserves all the credit it gets. But for 60K it better damn well perform.
I look forward to a “HELL RIDE” in Ernie’s car when he gets it.
For me, I’ll spend my 60K on a 2-year old Viper GTS.

If BMW made a 4WD 3-Series COUPE I might have bought one, but I need to get home when there is 6+ inches of unplowed snow on the roads.
RWD and traction control isn’t going to do that for me…..my Acura will.

get a fuckin clue.

i doubt half the people on here have bmw or penis envy.

the reason there is soo much Acura -vs- BMW bashing is that BMW is our prime competitor... and it probably fell on EVERYONES shopping list before they bought their Acura.

for any number of reasons they made an educated decision to choose Acura over BMW...

I doubt in any instance it came down to not being able to afford the BMW.

I guarantee that 75% of the people on here are making lease payments on their car. The rest are all making finance payments.

I guarantee that every person here could easily have afforded the extra $100/mo a BMW would cost.

GET OVER IT.

and dont give me that bullshit about there not being just as much bashing from BMW to here... thats a fuckin joke. Im a member of e46fans and dtm as well... they do just as much shit slingin as we do.

bmw's... despite the marketing... are NOT THE ULTIMATE MACHINE.

they are simply another car... nicer on many fronts... and shittier on just as many.

but tell me why you think its at all fair to presume that Acura owners are not satisified with their buying decision... yet BMW owners who talk just as much if not more shit somehow dont feel the same?

Pleaaase.

It breaks down to 2 competing cars... which are head to head in their segment. Thats it.

My take is whatever someone buys, it's because that's what he/she wants.

We can bash Maximas, GTPs, Bimmers, all we want... Just be prepared to dodge the shit that will be slung back.

My point... A car is a car. All cars have problems, regardless of price.

If I went out and bought a Ferrari today, I'm sure someone would say "Dude, you should have bought a Vette and saved yourself $200,000. You spent too much money on that car."

Life is full of differences of opinion. If we can't understand that as a community, then we ALL have a serious problem.

My opinion on this is very similar to several others:

THEY ARE BOTH NICE CARS

I, like most others, have Driven/ridden in numerous BMWs/Acuras.... They are both nice, but the Bimmers seem to be a little nicer. The Acura, like most other Japense cars, are all about Value, and kick-ass in that department, no one car argue that fact.

As Adam said, I too looked at the 3 series before buying my car, but for ME at THAT POINT in my life the extra $$$$ wasn't worth. The extra $8-10K WAS the difference between being able to afford the car or not, I had just graduated school & started working.... If I had the cash, I'm not sure what I would have done, you can buy a lot of cars for $41k.

I also agree this debate is getting a little... different people like different cars for different reasons.

For the average Joe, car purchase decisons are made on stupid criteria like image etc. etc.

For the average enthusiast, we analyze our choices more carefully and decide based on our own personal needs and tastes (of course these tastes may be influenced by our peer group).

Anyhow, the issue for me wasn't affordability but value for the money. A car is basically like flushing your money down the toilet because it is a depreciating asset but at the same time you gotta live so I set my budget at $40k Cdn and ended up with the TLS.

My other car is an A4 and I can't really bash either one, they are different beasts for different purposes.

I think one of the reasons that there's so much BMW bashing from CL owners may be that CL owners want BMW owners to realize and accept that the CL in fact is a direct and worthy competitor to the 3 series. And it seems that BMW 3 series owners do not think that the CL is good enough to challenge the 3 series. (Just my observation here.)

I do think the 3 series is a nice car and it drives well but I don't think it's anything that's heaven sent like most car mags and BMW owners think.

My choice was simple. I love BMW's and I had never owned an Acura or Honda. FWD is the thing that pushed it over the top. I see RWD in the ditch every time it snows. Say what you like but I feel more comfortable with FWD in the snow. Now that I have said that..... I bought an ol' beater Explorer, so I can buy anything I want.

Tell you the truth, I like BMW, although not as much as Lexus and Honda, I have to admit it makes great car. However, I don't think I would ever buy any BMW vehicle in my lifetime if it keeps overpricing its products. I don't see the justification of the $7000 or $8000 more for the cars with same level of features. Driving a 3 series makes me feel like driving a Civic cause the size just make me feel that way. For 5-series, it's 10 grand more than other Japanese mid-sized near-luxury sedans or sport sedans that have about the same size.

This is my first post here because I was mostly unaware of this site. As a BMW owner I will say I love the CL, I think its a great car and a worthy competitor mechanically wise. I shopped it when I bought my car but I didnt like the exterior styling as much and the handling wasnt quite were I want it to be. I agree that some people get out of hand and bash on both sides. But.....whoever said that 325 owners buy their care because of the status isnt entirely true. I have a 323 which I love and performance wise isnt far off at all 0-60 from the CL, handling wise feels a world better to me. Do some people buy their car for the name, I am sure, but I wouldnt think you would see as many on enthusiasts sites. I mean I could say the same thing about the Accord, all the people who bought a CL are just in it for the status over the accord. I see need for improvement on both cars, and the competition from Acura and now Infiniti is great it keeps everyone on their toes putting out even better cars in the future.

Dittos!

Also, since BMW is the benchmark in this space, it makes perfect sense that it is being targeted.

What I don't get is why we should worry, I've whipped every one I've run so far. And I don't count the new $50K+ M3 in that category. It may be based on a 3-Series, but it is in a league of its own. And for almost twice the price it should be. :P

I love my CL and would not trade it for any other car in it's price range. When I can afford a 540i 6spd, I'm gonna get one. We should be happy CL's get compared to BMW's and not the POS domestic coupes or Toyota Solara's in the 30K range.

Especially in LA, where every other car on the road is some sort of 3-series BMW (including M3's). I'm not trashing it at all, but those cars are waaay too common here.

When I was car shopping, I looked at damn near every car in this class/price range, and it didn't even cross my mind to step into a BMW dealer. I simply DIDN'T WANT a 3 series; I didn't even consider it.
