Thumbs down ACURA drops to 11th place on C.R. Reliability List

Yikes! Acura down to 11th place. Lexus & Toyota 1st and 2nd, Honda at 4th just below Mazda.

Saw this yesterday and it struck me as odd that Honda is 4th. Not because Honda doesn't necessarily belong in 4th place but why should there be such a difference between Honda and Acura.

Lexus and Toyota 1-2 makes more sense to me.........

I guess I'm old school - reliability to me means the car starts the majority of the time and gets me from point A to point B. The article states infotainment as the primary cause of issues for most brands, and mentions Toyota/Lexus primary lead is because the designs are ancient. As an IT admin, I'll tell you the majority of end users are classified as I D 1 0 T's and if they can't figure out where a setting is that's a mark against the brand's reliability. The most surprising spot on the list is Audi

I am not shocked at who is at the bottom of the list. Electronics is not a strong point with these makes.

Chevrolet
Chrysler
Ford
Mercedes-Benz
Dodge
Ram
Jeep
Fiat

As cars get packed with more electronics, the makers with the best reputation with electronics will stay on top.

that's exactly what it means.
they shouldn't base a car's overall reliability on things like the digital clock light going out and the power mirror motor breaking.

sure, its a pain in the ass problem, but nothing to do with the longevity of the car.

Saw the autoblog post talking about this.

Main problem with reliability issue seems to be with all the "Infotainment" systems that's all the rage these days. And these things are breaking alot. Infiniti is notorious and looks like Acura is having its fair share of issues as well.

i just hope those 3 batteries will last in the RLX SHAWD.
Absolutely unnecessary in a car that was supposed to be built for reliability and DD.

Audi is up there because of their shit is so outdated. wait for the next gen.

I am actually surprised that BMW is at 14th, i would expect it to be at the very bottom with Benz because of the amount of tech available as options. and of course they will break.

+1

reliability is turning your car on and the engine starts every time.

Wish more cars were like tesla and connect to wifi and download software updates for the various bugs and crap.

But oh wait.... dealers would hate that

I think this is a stupid survey. Cars can never keep up with the technological advancement of phones/computers. People own their cars wayy longer than they do their laptops/phones/any other tech gizmo.

Anyone remember those old 90s car phones?

^^I totally agree with this, good point...

My past MDX's and TL were trouble free. However, after following the RLX, TLX and MDX forums. And having a bad experience on an extended test drive with a new 2015 MDX I am really not shocked at this report.

Hopefully once the bugs are worked out of their new models Acura will head back up.

Yes, because the average idiot that doesnt know how to use their new phone, or has a hard time turning their tv on because their remote has too many buttons is a good indicator of reliability in a study. The majority of the crap lowering the ratings on vehicles is peoples own stupidity and lack of being able to figure something simple out. No one wants to take blame, they want to blame someone else.

While I do agree with you about the average idiot and how lack of RTFM shouldn't be part of the survey, he was in that role for 7 years and his company isn't normally associated with technology advances.

Mind you many cars go through a puddle of water and die. Remember this famous truck? It went into the ocean and kept on going.

Yes, there are a lot of (technologically challenged?) people who have trouble figuring things out on their own. Maybe it's from not bothering to RTFM. Or maybe it's because of shitty interface designs and burying settings deep within a set of menus (ex. 1st gen implementation of iDrive)

ironic that you all should be talking about electronics as a point of failure, I'd be far more concerned about Mechanical problems as if the engine or trans quits, you are done

2002 Acura CL-S has suffered NO electronics failure in nearly 14 years of service, it has however suffered abnormal mechanical problems such as eating lower ball joints 4 sets in 100K miles, driver front wheel bearing, 1 transmission, 1 pressure switch, 3 mounts, thin easily worn leather on steering wheel and seats....

2003 Subaru Legacy, Major engine problems by 60K (to be fair I don't know how the car was treated by previous owner but outside of that, everything was in excellent shape along with CarFax showing oil changes roughly every 3.5K miles) head gaskets were leaking when I decided to get it repaired total cost in repairs for the engine 2.8K plus another $1K for fixing the PS rack, A/C and some other minor stuff ...

I would say that both of these cars are example of NOT reliable. TO be fair to the Subaru, we'll see how far it goes now that it basically has newly rebuilt engine in it that could have been user abuse to the car.

Mileage is listed in sig for both cars and it is current

The stat that bothers me is the raking is -8 since last year.I hope that Acura can turn this around.

For me,I gotta say that after the little bugs on my '15 RDX were taken care of,it's been problem free day after day...a trend that I hope continues.

But just in case..I signed up for the 8yr/120mile Acuracare extended warranty yesterday.I hope I never need it..but if I do it's easier to sleep at night.

Acura at # 12 now.

'Consumer Reports' shocks by lauding this U.S. auto brand

'Consumer Reports' shocks by lauding this U.S. auto brand

October 24, 2016

Buick became the first auto brand from Detroit's Big 3 automakers in three decades Monday to place in the top three in Consumer Reports' annual ranking of the most reliable automobiles.

The upscale General Motors nameplate came in third behind Lexus and Toyota in the closely watched index that predicts how well cars will hold up over the years.

Out of 29 brands, Asian nameplates accounted for seven of the top 10 spots. Lexus was ranked first, with a predicted reliability score of 86, followed by Toyota, Buick, Audi, Kia, Mazda, Hyundai, Infiniti, BMW and Honda.

Vehicles sold by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles continued to struggle in the survey with four of its brands — Dodge, Chrysler, Fiat and Ram — occupying the bottom four slots.

Consumer Reports rankings reliability rankings are based on a survey that analyzes the magazine subscribers experiences with new vehicles over the past three years. That feedback is used to predict future reliability.

Chevrolet ranked as the second-best domestic brand and is in 15th place overall among the 29 brands covered.

Buick has been performing well in the Consumer Reports survey for several years and has also emerged as a top performer in other industry studies.

In February, Buick was also the third best-ranked brand in J.D. Power's influential vehicle dependability study — which measures problems experienced by owners over a three year period.

This year, it out-distanced its past performance and was able to surge to the top of GM's stable because its few models did well. The Buick Enclave, Encore, Verano and Regal all scored near the top of their individual segments.

"GM, I would say, really does deserve a lot of credit. They are making very reliable cars," said Jake Fisher, Consumer Reports’ director of automotive testing. "Some of these are global products that have been proven overseas as well ... It's very impressive."

But while Fisher said GM's cars and crossovers have improved the automaker, along with Ford and Fiat Chrysler, struggles more when it comes to pickups and truck-based SUVs. The Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon as well as the Cadillac Escalade are ranked among the 10 worst models and the Silverado, launched in 2014, has also struggled in the survey.

Ford’s mainstream Ford brand was ranked 18th while the Lincoln brand fell four spots to No. 20. Consumer Reports said Ford continues to have problems with its nine-speed automatic transmissions, especially in the Ford Focus compact car and Fiesta subcompact car.

“This is a shame, because it’s a great car to drive,” Fisher said.

Consumer Reports released the survey results Monday before the Automotive Press Association.

Tesla, the luxury electronic carmaker, is ranked 25th, which is well below average. This is the first year that Tesla has been ranked because, until now, there was only one Tesla model. Fisher said Tesla's ranking was pulled down by the newer Model X.

In general, Fisher said, new or redesigned models perform worse on the surveys because manufacturers are still working out manufacturing kinks. The older Tesla Model S performed better, and is now recommended by Consumer Reports.

While Asian automakers continued to dominate the rankings. There was a surprising trouble in the survey for Honda.

Consumer Reports said Honda's reliability scores have become less consistent.

Honda, which normally finishes in the top ten on the reliability survey, has been hurt by spotty results on new introductions, Consumer Reports said. Honda's redesigned Pilot SUV scored just average.

Honda’s popular Civic sedan scored much-worse-than-average on reliability because of problems with its power equipment and infotainment systems, Consumer Reports said. The Civic was North American Car of the Year for 2016.

Meanwhile, Korean automakers continued to rise in the rankings. Both Kia and Hyundai finished in the top 10. Even more impressive — no Kia or Hyundai models scored below average. The Kia Forte, Optima, Soul and Sorento along with the Hyundai Azera, Accent and Santa Fe all scored among the top in their segments.

Brands sold by Fiat Chrysler have historically performed poorly on the survey. This year, Consumer Reports said no Fiat or Ram model scored average or better.

Only the company's Chrysler 300 sedan, Dodge Grand Caravan minivan, and Jeep Patriot SUV managed an average or better score. All three of those vehicles are made on platforms that are at least several years old, indicating that FCA is eventually able to work out manufacturing kinks but struggles with newer vehicles.

“(Fiat Chrysler) values all feedback from our customers and third-party evaluators, including Consumer Reports, as it helps guide our product improvements," the company said in a statement. "Our internal quality surveys and measurements continue to show positive growth toward vehicle quality and dependability across our brands."

How Consumer Reports ranked brands by reliability:

1, Lexus

2. Toyota

3. Buick

4. Audi

5. Kia

6. Mazda

7. Hyundai

8. Infiniti

9. BMW

10. Honda

11. Subaru

12. Acura

13. Nissan

14. Mini

15. Chevrolet

16. Porsche

17. Mercedes-Benz

18. Ford

21. Cadillac

22. Volkswagen

23. Jeep

24. GMC

25. Tesla

26. Dodge

27. Chrysler

28. Fiat

29. Ram

Surprisingly, they no longer recommend the Honda Civic...
