1200 miles in 21 hours

Thats right, I got home saturday at 10am after leaving orlando at 1pm. I bought a 1995 Cobra and drove it back home to Detroit. Here's a couple things I learned:

1. People in Tennesee are scary. I swear I was on a movie set both times I had to stop for gas in that state.

2. A rich tune on a forged 347 only delivers ~ 16mpg on the highway, and barely makes it past 200 miles per tank. It sucks stopping every 3 hours for gas.

3. 347 >>>>>>>>>>>> 302. (extra own brackets done on purpose). I dont have any rwhp numbers, but the extra fun the low end torque and actual power past 4500rpm is crazy.

4. A Detroit locker rear end, triax shifter, tremec 3550 tanny, and mcloed street twin clutch combo will make your right arm & left leg WAY stronger. However, theres nothing like powershifting the 1-2 and having instant clutch grab and 100% posi lock on the tires.

5. I missed owning a black car. Ever since I sold my only black car i told myself no way i'd own one again. Too much cleaning, too many scratches, etc. Now I'm hooked again. Nothing like the shine of a freshly polished black car.

6. Michigan has the worst roads. Period. I didnt feel like the car rode bad at all, until I got to michigan. I swear for the previous 1k miles I barely hit any ruts, and then as soon as i get onto I-94 in detroit I bottom out 3 times in a 10 minute period. You guys in southern states have no idea how lucky you are to have awesomely pothole-free roads.

7. Atlanta drivers are freakin nuts. I'm going 80 in a 55 in the second right lane, an theres people in the HOV lane and left lane easily going 100mph and more.

8. Westin hotel employees dont like people sleeping in their cars in their parkign lot. I took a nap and got woken up by 3 sheriff cars and had the car searched. I was def not getting anymore sleep after that.

9. Florida is humid as HELL. thats pretty self explantory. I thought michigan was humind, being surrounded by water and all. Its got nothing on the sticky damn weather i had for the first leg of the drive.

BTW i did the entire drive myself, and since i worked the previous night (midnights) when I got home I had been up for 3 days straight with a total of 7 hours of sleep.

Anyways, I'll get some pics and soundclips of the car up today.

Joe,

Congrats on the Florida car ... you are nuts doing that drive all by your self without very much sleep. I suppose those gas stops helped you focus to stay awake.

na... I've done 1500 miles in 19 hours straight. South FL to Boston. Myself. Went 90+ most of the way.

I can agree with the Alanta drivers, & TN, been there......
If you need to sleep stop at a rest area & sleep in the car. Man never the side of the road or someone's parking lot. As you found out people are paranoid. I had that happen as well.

Not even close. I paid probably about $200 in gas, shipping it would cost $750 for an open trailer, and it takes 1-2 weeks. Plus, thats such a pussy move, I buy a car to drive it.

Yeah chung you got me, but by yourself? If so you're a braver man than I.

So you spent $200 in gas? Excellent.

Were making the drive from Jacksonville to Philadelphia in a couple weeks in the GTI. It gets about 27-30 mpg on the highway and thats how much I budgeted for the one-way trip. Looks like an overestimate (which I like).

I found that if you can make it past 12 hours without any problems you get a second wind and can do 12 more. Its a lot harder to get it together if you are getting bored or tired after 5 or 6. I guess it depends a lot on your mood. That trip was coming back from Miami. I initially intended to do it all at once but had to stay the night in TX.

I'm sure my time didnt set any records, thats for sure. hell I FORCED myself to slow down my speed because cruising at 80mph was netting only 16mpg. Slowing down to 70mph helped a bit, to 18mpg.

Also I did the drive on almost no sleep, and in a car that I didnt know.

And I dunno about all parts of tennesee, but the two gas stations along I75 I stopped at were enough to convince me to want to leave. haha

I drove for 7 hours straight before I felt like I was going to pass out (11pm-6am). Switched with my wife, who drove for about an hour and a half, then I continued to drive from 7:30am to 3PM, at that point I couldn't see straight, so my wife drove the final hour.
