'09 Maxima vs. 4Gen TL
I'll take the Maxima. It looks just 'ok' in pics, but very nice in person, and it has all the features that the current G35 has, plus a dual moonroof. It's a very nice car, and interior looks pretty good, very similar to the G35, too.
Other than the AWD, I don't see why anyone would pick the TL over the Maxima, unless they think Acura is a luxury brand (somewhat).
Wake up Acura.

Maxima looks MUCH better than the 4G TL. Sorry Acura designers, but you didn't win me over on this. I just cannot bring myself to like the exterior styling.
Interiorwise, the TL FTW.
However, modded 2G RL over both.

Maxima has nicer appearance
Saw a new Maxima on the road last weekend. I had to do a double-take since I had no idea what I was looking at. Pictures do not give the new Maxima justice.
I do hope the same can be said about the 4th gen TL but I've seen the oversized grill on the '09 TSX and cannot see how that will bode well for the TL. Nor can I see how the trunk design will be better in person than in pics.
I can't say anything about the interiors to either car. That would be more of a factor than exterior appearance since I would have to live with that on a daily basis. But don't get me wrong -- what it looks like on the outside is very important too.
So far:
Maxima: 1
TL: 0
Ironic to think Honda cars know where it's going in appearance / direction but the trucks are kinda quirky in design. In contrast, Acura (cars) is out in left field but at least the trucks have an appearance that most here could say has a positive design (definitely in comparison to the cars ...).

Well seems like the new Max has an advantage in the looks dept. I to agree. If you took looks completely out of the equation and just compared features, performance, gas mileage etc which would win? I would say the base TL should be the comparison car. The SH-AWD would be probably $4k-$5k more than a maxxed out Max. Maybe it is worth that cost to get the better engine and AWD.
Finally, why do a lot of people have a problem with the CVT. I drove it and loved it. Not necessarly more than my '06 TL 6MT but if I went to a slushbox I would choose this over a standard automatic any day. If for one can't stand the downshift and delay in a regular automatic when passing or having it search for a gear when going up hills/mountains. To me the CVT gives you a great compromise and is buttery smooth. comments on the tranny?

Like I said before, the Maxima has been somewhat competing with the TL at least since the 2G TL. The Maxima has always been the flagship or Nissan and has always offered (or at least that's what Nissan has been trying to achieve) sportiness and luxury in a value package, similar to what the TL has always been doing. They both seem to sell reasonably well, especially the TL. Perhaps the difference now is that, the TL has always been a prettier car than the Maxima? But the 4G TL is now uglier than the Maxima? That's the only difference I can see now and suddenly many people are saying the Max is better....I think someone even said the Maxima will have better handling and acceleration than the TL. I don't think we can make conclusion like that...there isn't any official road test yet..only a few "first-drive" reviews. But from these first-drive reviews (you can find them in the 4G TL forum), I don't recall seeing any negative reviews yet (then someone will come and say oh Honda/Acura must be paying big bucks to these mags that's why the reviews are positive...this kind of comment is simply childish); in fact, the reviews thus far are quite positive.
In summary, I will hold my judgment until I see more road tests. Appearance-wise though, both are ugly, but the Maxima is still clearly the winner in this category.

$42k is for the top of the line TL with SH-AWD and tech package. The base SH-AWD model should start below $40k.
I think the Maxima has always been somewhat a competitor to the TL, at least since the 2g TL. Both have been FWD, V6 sedans. When the 2G TL came out, both cars are roughly making 222-225hp, then the 2g TL-S went to 260hp, Maxima followed with 255. 3G TL went to 270hp, Maxima closely followed with 265hp. Price-wise the Maxima has always been below the TL also. So in my opinion they are somewhat competing with each other and I think this will continue for the new max and the 4G TL.

no,
TL is not in the same class as a maxima.......it is a better car......that's like saying that neon SRT/8 is comparable to a TL becuase it has 250hp.........
TL is for a person who wants a compentent car that can get out of it's own way........while being quiet and unobstusive......
maxima is for someone who wants a sporty family car and you DO PAY to add the options that you get standard on a TL

hmm...I don't think I said they are in the same class...I said "the Maxima has always been SOMEWHAT a competitor to the TL," not "the Maxima has always been a DIRECT competitor to the TL." Sorry about the confusion.
whether or not the maxima and TL are direct or somewhat competitors, i can see customers looking for a midsize sports sedan in the mid-30's range cross-shopping both cars.
so, yes. i would consider them competitors because price-wise, the two cars offer a lot of the same things.
and it says a lot about the TL's looks when the majority in this thread are saying the maxima's the better looking car. especially after so many of you hated it in the maxima thread.
for nissan for bringing the maxima back.

In a way, I think the 09 Maxima is similar to the 07-08 TL-S 5AT. Road and Track actually did a full test on the Max..0-60 in 6.1s, 1/4mile in 14.6@97.7mph. These numbers are quite similar to what a TL-S 5AT can do (there's a guy from the TL forum who ran his stock TL-S 5AT at a track and got 14.3s even though it was his first time on the track, granted, it was a "fast" track). A quick visit to Nissan website tells me a loaded Max is $38k, which is also similar to what a TL-S 5AT would cost (of course, dealers have been selling the TL-S at a much lower price as we all know).
does 335= maxima/tl no proceed to question two now
does c350= maxima/tl no
then dont post about them

I have rented Maximas and Muranos and cannot stand the CVT. It feels like I'm driving a go-cart (in more ways than one).I have had two previous Maximas and loved them. But, they are not in the same competitive market as the TL. I moved up considerably when I got my TL.
You may like the looks of the new Maxima, but that still doesn't put it in the same niche as the TL. AND, the TL has moved upscale this year.
I haven't driven a 2009 yet so I can't make that comparison. Suffice it to say that the 2008s I had were cheap and plasticky in comparison. They were also rough and noisy and topped out at 132 MPH in the Nevada desert.
I am reserving my final judgement (of styling) until I see the 2009 TL in person but I'm not happy with the pics. In any case, I'm sure that homely step-child will have quality and dependability built in -and get good mileage and have top safety ratings.
Thats like asking who you'd rather take home for a night, Joan Rivers vs. Rosie O'Donnell.
Either way it doesnt look good.
I think they both are horrid, and were styled to be DIFFERENT not BETTER.

The O9 Maxima is way better looking than the 09 TL. The 09 TSX is becoming more common on the roads and I have grown to actually like it
I only saw one 09 RL on the road and it was WDP with some nice tints. It actually looks good. Guess we will have to wait for the 09 TL on the streets.
