'09 Maxima vs. 4Gen TL

Does anyone consider the new'09 Maxima a competitor to the TL (4th Gen). The new max is packed with features, handles well and has eliminated torque steer. HAs the CVT which some like and some hate. Top of the line priced around $37k just like the TL. Any thoughts. I have an '06 TL 6 speed and was waiting for the 4GEn to come out and hate the looks.

I thought I read the TL with SH-AWD would start at $42K, so unless you're limiting yourself to the FWD version it would be a ways off price wise.

Between the Maxima and the TL, I'd still go with the TL.

$42k is for the top of the line TL with SH-AWD and tech package. The base SH-AWD model should start below $40k.

I think the Maxima has always been somewhat a competitor to the TL, at least since the 2g TL. Both have been FWD, V6 sedans. When the 2G TL came out, both cars are roughly making 222-225hp, then the 2g TL-S went to 260hp, Maxima followed with 255. 3G TL went to 270hp, Maxima closely followed with 265hp. Price-wise the Maxima has always been below the TL also. So in my opinion they are somewhat competing with each other and I think this will continue for the new max and the 4G TL.

IMO the only failure of the new TL is its fugly appearance....depending on what you want in a car..if appearance is all you care..then yea...it's a total failure.

I didn't like the new Maxima at first (from pictures), but saw one in person... from behind? LOVED IT! The headlights? ...is (still) going to take a little getting used to...

Does the new maxima look good? New TL is hideous.

If the 09 Maxima offers an optional AWD package, I'd buy it over the TL. I'm really trying to like the TL's exterior design. It's the only reason why I'm still on the fence about making it my next purchase. Hopefully, by the time the MMC comes around, Acura will make enough changes so that most of the negatives goes away, a la the the 06 Accord.

Definitely a competitor.... but I would definitely look elsewhere. FWD aside, if I were looking for a sporty entry-level luxury sedan, there are much better choices.

My co-worker has a new Maxima, and man, that thing was nice. Very upscale and luxurious. I like the looks of the new Maxima, but the price is a little steep.

What do you consider good competitors. These would be on my list but some I would never drive based on certain factors:

BMW 328/335
Infiniti G37
Lexus 350
Audi a4/a6

Others?

I also agree that the pic of the new MAx was suspect but seeing it in person I was like, WOW, that looks darn good. I still don't like or understand why they would put those open gaps on either side of the front driving lights on the lower bumper. It looks like they just forgot about that area and left holes there. Other than that it looks aggressive and the inside is packed full of features (premium SV that is) with cooled driver seat to boot Looks like an Infiniti M35 on the inside and to me an Infiniti M35 is not in the same league as a TL so I don't consider this a direct competitor either.

I don't think the TL is a competitor for the Maxima. That's how little I like the TL.

no question that they have always been competitors.

thought the max looked like crap until i saw one in person. in regards to the headlights, most of your attention is deterred to other nicer features of the car. so its not TOO bothering.

ill save judgment until the TL comes out.

funny that nissan seemed to have swallowed their pride with the last gen. what a flop. they made no attempt to carry over the design. completely started from scratch.

acura, did the same thing, however they made massive changes on a car with a GOOD design. numbnuts!

I haven't driven the new E9x 3-series yet but I've driven several E46s, without a doubt the E9x will be among the best handling cars in this segment. Unfortunately I haven't driven any of the new Infinitis or Audis so I shouldn't comment, but they look great in person and on paper (G/M and A6/A4). I was disappointed by a member's review of the A4 though.... he seemed to give off the impression that the new Audis don't have much steering feel or overall feedback - isolated like most Lexus are.

My sister has an ES350 which I usually drive to chauffeur her to/from the airport or for family occasions... its a very nice car, its stupid quiet on the inside, the engine and transmission are smooth as hell, but its not exactly a fun or good handling car.

Personally I'd go with the 328i if I were you, 6-speed manual, done deal. If you can swing it, why not go for the 335i?

Yeah, I think they compete w/ each other. I saw a new Max recently and it looked good. I have to see the new TL in person before I pass judgment.

Reason I say this is because I thought the Max was ugly as sin inside and out before I saw it in person.

Especially if you're not considering the AWD version, I would be more likely to buy the new Max because it looks a lot better than the new TL, which (once again) is just plain fugly IMO.

I will probably get something with AWD for my next car, but I would look at a new Infiniti G or certified pre-owned Infiniti M or Acura RL ('08 or earlier, without the beak) before the TL. Damn shame because I'm sure it's great on the inside, but for that kinda $$$ I would not be able to get past the look.

Are you listening, Acura???

The new TL is garbage. If I had to get an acura, I would get a used '06/07 RL.

oh, and i think the maxima has one of the best looking rears today.

it looks kinda plain in pictures, but the way the LEDs are sorted is very nice. and the rear makes the car look like a sports car.
