Wow, there's a lot of good ideas here!

It seems like:

2011 BMW 550i (new)
M3/M5 (lightly used)
e63 AMG (lightly used)
A4/S5
CTS-V

It seems like I'm basically leaning right now towards the BMWs.

Is it true that the great majority of BMWs are leased? Am I looking at a total bloodbath on buying a new 550i?

The BMWs definitely seem to have the technology advantage. The CTS-V, in comparison, seems almost bare-bones with the available options..though 550hp SC definitely helps!

If I was you and wanted/had to stay with your guide lines I would get a M3 loaded.

for $70K with flexiblity. there is no better car than new Audi A8. where else will you get torque vectoring sport differential, drive select, and adjustable air supension. (ride height adjustment for different conditions) and world most advanced MMI with 3G connectivity. ground breaking aero profile for its size, and very light weight for V8 flagship. lighter than BMW 550.

I must be the only one that thinks the CTS-V is just plain ugly.

The one and only choice:

Do. It.

I prefer the coupe over the sedan, but you mentioned family so the sedan will be suitable to your needs.

Lexus LS460 Sport- not as sporting as some of the listed vehicles but should be a rock solid, reliable vehicle now that they ironed out the steering issue. Power, decent economy, fantastic materials and finish, room to spare, style, prestige. A fine choice.

Audi S6? Mercedes CLS550? On second thought just wait for the 2011 CLS.
My dad had a XF Supercharged. Quick and luxurious. It was, for the most part, reliable. It was in the shop for only one recall in the year my dad had it. (Claimed it was too fast, he wanted a 7 series). But I would say get the 550i.

No kidding, that dealer is about a mile from my office. And they park it outside on nice days. That car is CLEAN. Needless to say, if I saw that car last October when I was looking to get mine, I'd be rolling in that for sure...

I just looked on autotrader and it looks like the nearest M3 for sale is over a 100 miles away!

If I lived close to that beautiful M3, I'd be test-driving it today.

In your budget you don't need a used M3. You can get probably a close to fully loaded M3 in your price range.

If you wanted an M5, then you would have to go used.

Personally I would either go with, M3, 550i, or CTS V. Depending on how much sport you want, consider the M3 and CTS V, or if you prefer more luxury go with the 550i.

If you've been lurking around on here, you will see that there have been quite a few 2011 BMW 5 series threads. And if you read those, they look like amazing cars. I havent read many reviews yet though. So I'm taking the word of many Azine members.

My friend has CLS550... It's good looking and all, but I can't fit in the backseat as my head hits the fking top. Its headroom is ridiculously minimal.

Anyway, just get a fully loaded Mustang 5.0 and save the money.

Any consideration on the CLS63 AMG? The only car mentioned so far that's faster in a straight line is the CTS-V (M5 ties), which I also like as a close second. M5/3 third.

I'm researching the 63 AMG.

So far, it looks like a new M3/used M5, CTS-V (although the 2011 CTS-V couple is supposed to be out soon, though apparently it is ?), and the 63 AMG....

The 550i is nice but, man, $20k for options is just insane.

But do you really want (I almost wrote need) those options? A 535i is already an hell of a fast car - and priced right. In my case, I'd choose a F10 because as getting older, I give luxury more importance than before, more of that at this level of price.

The 535i is not really in the same league as the CTS-V performance wise. Then again not many cars are...especially when the price of the V is considered.
A four door rocket sled with all the amenities for 70k...why would anyone want that?

As far as the V coupe is concerned.... a better handling rocket sled, minus 2 doors of course.

Know somebody in almost the same situation. $65k budget or so but without the family requirement.

Right now it's an optioned out 2011 535i versus an Audi S4.

Nice dilemma to be in!
