They must be in bed with sony in some way now...

Anyway...I am a Nikkor lens whore.....BUT I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Zeiss lens in a heartbeat. I use them all the time in the filmmaking world.

I still don't get the big thrill. I know Zeiss makes great glass, but there's a few things I'm not big about:
1) Nikon doesn't yet have a FF sensor so it's unlikely there will be a big benefit for the current APS cropped cameras. Film bodies of course would see a benefit.
2) Stop down metering. This one would be a major PITA for me.
3) No auto focus. Not such a big deal, but you'd definitely want a large viewfinder and a split-prisim focusing screen if you're going to be using this glass.
4) Price. Considering a Nikkor 85/1.4 goes for $750 and the Zeiss 85/2 is $2750, they had better be really good.
Cool concept, but I wonder how practical it really is.

Cost is no different then buying Leica glass.
I wouldnt buy one because i am set on good primes.
But I love the idea of being able to take your body and use whatever quality glass you want.
Nikon wont go FF. And im not bothered buy it...because I dont want to have to rebuy all my glass.....like some Canon owners would if they upgrade.

Results have been seen in feature films like "Lord of the Rings", "Alexander", "King Arthur", "Air Force One", "Collateral", "King Kong" and many commercials and music clips.

Why is that funny
The Zeiss Digiprimes are THE most amazing pieces of optics in the digital HD realm.
And Zeiss has always made amazing glass for motion picture cameras.
There are worse things to derive news lenses from

But a director tells the DP (director of photography) what he wants, and the DP does hsi best to acheive the look the director wants. more or less.

let's take for instance the HUGE pans in PJ movies - for instance LOTR - panning across great expanses of scenery, sometimes rotating while panning, mixing near and far scenery to really create some dynamic visuals... who makes those calls?

cinematography is blanket term for lighting/camera

Its a collaboration.
If I see something that I think fits the story I'll run it by the director and say hey, what do you think about this. He'll he either, yeah awesome or nah don't need it.
For a movie as HUGE as LOTR a lot of that stuff is pre-decided in pre-production, and storyboarded (sketched) out months before even shooting.
